Overview
CEN/TS 15504:2007 is a European technical specification developed by CEN to standardize visible variable passenger information devices (Interior Variable Message Signs - IVMS) inside public transport road vehicles such as buses, tramways, and trolleybuses. This standard specifies requirements for the installation location, dimensions, characteristics, information content, and electrical connections of IVMS. Technologies like LCD, LED, and VFD displays are supported, focusing on passenger information clarity and system interoperability within vehicle environments.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
Applies to electronic IVMS systems providing dynamic passenger information inside public transport vehicles. This includes next stop signs, route signs, and precise time and tariff zone displays.Installation Locations
- Next Stop IVMS: Mounted as high as possible, either hanging or built-in, located in front and rear for vehicles with seats facing driving direction; each section of articulated vehicles requires its own sign.
- Route IVMS: Positioned laterally above windows or at boarding areas, often double-sided near middle doors for interior and exterior visibility.
- Precise Time and Tariff Zone IVMS: Installed similarly high as next stop signs with flexibility depending on vehicle seat arrangement.
Information Content
- Next Stop IVMS: Displays next stop name prominently; can also show line number, route terminus, current date/time, and stop request confirmations. Alternating or static displays are permitted depending on technology.
- Route IVMS: Indicates entire vehicle route, current stop, terminus, line number, and interchange facilities, designed for clear segmentation of information fields.
- Precise Time and Tariff Zone IVMS: Shows current time and applicable fare zone information.
Legibility and Display Characteristics
- Recommended font mimics Helvetica style, supports both capital and small letters, adaptable to different alphabets.
- Minimum character height set to 40 mm for next stop signs and 8 mm for route signs to ensure readability.
- Pixel matrix configurations and color choices are adaptable but must guarantee clarity and visibility under various lighting conditions.
- Horizontal scrolling text is limited to 6 characters per second for better passenger comprehension.
Physical Dimensions and Mounting
- Defined minimum and maximum dimensions for different IVMS types to allow flexibility in vehicle design without compromising visibility.
- Anti-glare covers or non-reflective glass are recommended for vandalism protection and improved legibility.
- Mounting must enable easy installation, exchange, and maintenance.
Electrical and Environmental Considerations
- IVMS should connect directly or via a control unit to the vehicle’s onboard transmission bus compliant with existing European standards for data communication.
- Designed to comply with national environmental standards ensuring durability and operational reliability in public transport conditions.
Applications
Public Transport Vehicles:
Implemented in buses, trams, and trolleybuses to provide real-time passenger information, enhancing travel experience and operational efficiency.Route and Stop Information Systems:
Improves communication of route changes, upcoming stops, and fare zones to passengers, increasing accessibility and user satisfaction.Traffic and Fleet Management Integration:
IVMS linked with vehicle Automatic Vehicle Monitoring Systems (AVMS) and Vehicle Board Information and Control Systems (VBICS) facilitates dynamic updates and fleet control.Accessibility Enhancements:
Supports clear, visible display parameters for diverse passengers, including those with visual impairments.
Related Standards
- EN 13149-1: Defines WORLDFIP onboard data transmission rules for public transport scheduling and control systems.
- EN 13149-2: Complements data communication standards within public transport vehicle systems.
These related standards emphasize data communication compatibility and system integration, ensuring IVMS devices conform to broader vehicle telematics frameworks.
