Overview

EN 16263-2:2015 (CEN) - “Pyrotechnic articles - Other pyrotechnic articles - Part 2: Requirements” defines essential construction, safety and performance requirements for a broad range of non-vehicle pyrotechnic articles. Covered product types include flares, flash devices, gas generators, heaters, rockets and rocket motors, smoke/aerosol generators, sound emitters, pyromechanical devices, semi‑finished articles and pyrotechnic liquid dispersers. The standard excludes articles that contain certain toxic or environmentally harmful substances (e.g., arsenic, mercury, white phosphorus, lead compounds except in ignition devices) and excludes some detonative explosives except where limited to black powder and/or flash composition.

Keywords: EN 16263-2:2015, pyrotechnic articles, CEN, requirements, flares, smoke generators, rockets.

Key Topics

  • Scope & exclusions - product types covered and substances not permitted in formulations.
  • General safety requirements - incompatible substances, safe disposal, protection of ignition means and required safety features (safe/arm devices, pins, delays).
  • Ignition devices - requirements for included or subcomponent ignition devices; reference to prEN 16265 for non-CE certified ignition devices (electrical characteristics, ESD resistance, mechanical strength, all‑fire/no‑fire thresholds).
  • Toxicity & user information - manufacturer obligations to disclose toxic reaction products and provide exposure-limiting instructions.
  • Performance verification - functional testing per EN 16263-4 (firing, timing, effects) including verification after mechanical and thermal conditioning.
  • Mechanical & environmental resistance - mechanical impact, moisture, high/low temperature resistance and integrity tests.
  • Manufacturing quality control - primary pack requirements, type testing, batch testing, sampling plans (reference to ISO 2859-1) and test reporting.
  • Documentation & labelling - mandatory labelling and instructions for safe use, disposal and conformity with EU directives.

Keywords: safety features, ignition devices, mechanical impact, thermal conditioning, labelling, type testing, batch testing.
