prEN 16034:2009 (E)
Introduction
With the aim of clarifying the intentions of this European Standard and avoiding doubts when reading it, the
following assumptions were made when producing it:
a) The terms pedestrian doorsets (as defined in EN 14351-1 and/or prEN 14351-2) and industrial- /
commercial- / garage doors (as defined in EN 13241-1) have been replaced by the term doorset in
general as the original drafts prEN 14351-3 and prEN 13241-2 have been merged to this one European
product standard for fire and/or smoke control characteristics.
b) Doorsets / openable windows are:
ƒ designed in accordance with the usual engineering practice and calculation codes for intended
use, including all failure modes;
ƒ of sound mechanical and electrical construction;
ƒ made of materials with adequate strength and of suitable quality for intended use;
ƒ general electrical hazards are dealt with according to electrical safety standards such as EN
60204-1.
c) Doorsets / openable windows are kept in good repair and working order, so that the required
characteristics remain during the economical working life despite wear;
d) Fire resisting and smoke control doorsets / openable windows can only provide their designed fire
resistance or smoke control capability when they are in the closed position.
e) For doorsets / openable windows built according to good practice and the requirements of this European
Standard to be fully effective it is assumed that;
ƒ negotiations occur between the manufacturer and the purchaser concerning particular conditions
for the use and places of use for the door related to health and safety;
ƒ the place of use/installation to be adequately lit;
ƒ the place of use/installation to allow safe use of the door.
These assumptions do not restrict the need for adequate information for use in this European Standard.
prEN 16034:2009 (E)
1 Scope
1.1 General
This European Standard identifies material independent, safety and performance requirements related to fire
resistance and / or smoke control characteristics that are applicable to industrial- / commercial- / garage

prEN 16034:2009 (E)
7 Evaluation of conformity
7.1 General
The compliance of doorsets / openable windows to the requirements of this document and with the stated
values (including classes) shall be demonstrated by:
ƒ initial type testing (ITT), see 7.2
ƒ factory production control (FPC), see 7.6.
ƒ initial inspection of factory and FPC; see 7.7
ƒ continuous surveillance and approval of FPC; see 7.8
For the purposes of testing, doorsets / openable windows may be grouped into families, to be determined by
and under the responsibility of the manufacturer. It is considered that the results of one or more
characteristics from any one doorset / openable window test within the family are representative for that
same characteristic to all doorsets / openable window within that same family. A doorset / openable window
may be in different families for different characteristics.
Irrespective of the declared family, the variations allowed against the tested specimen are those stated by
the direct and/or extended field of application of test results rules (see 7.2.1).
Doorsets / openable windows produced as pre-production products and/or prototypes are covered by 7.8.
NOTE A prototype is a first or preliminary product on which production is based or formed.
7.2 Initial Type testing (ITT)
7.2.1 General
An initial type test is the complete set of tests or other procedures, in respect of the characteristics to be
declared, determining the performance of samples of doorsets / openable windows representative of the
doorsets / openable windows type or family.
When deciding on the families the manufacturer should consider any requirements for direct and extended
application.
NOTE 1 The rules to evaluate the direct field of application of fire and smoke doorsets / openable windows are given
in EN 1634-1 and EN1634-3 and are based on the results of a single test. These relate to the more common forms of
constructions for which experience of testing has provided the knowledge that such variations can be safely accepted.
The extent of the permitted variations is generally conservative and is based on the minimum level of common
agreement achieved.
NOTE 2 Variations outside of the rules given in direct application require the consideration of agreed expert opinion
and/or the interpolation and extrapolation from a series of tests in order to produce a field of extended application. The
outcome of the agreed expert opinion provides the basis for the extended field of application given in prEN 15269-1.
Whenever the term ITT is used, it covers not only physical testing but also other means of demonstrating
conformity, such as direct and extended application, calculation, use of historical data, deemed to satisfy
provisions or reference to tabulated data.
Initial type testing shall be performed to show conformity with the declared characteristics in this standard for
doorsets / openable windows being put onto the market except the release of dangerous substances which
may be assessed indirectly by controlling the content of the substance concerned.
prEN 16034:2009 (E)
Where characteristics of the components used have already been determined, by the component
manufacturer, on the basis of conformity with other technical specifications (e.g. a drive unit, anti-drop
device, self-closing device, etc), these characteristics need not be reassessed provided:
that the components’ performance remains the same and
that the characteristics of the component are suitable for the intended end use of the finished doorsets /
openable windows and
that the manufacturing process does not have a detrimental affect on the determined characteristics.
The doorsets / windows manufacturer shall obtain from the component manufacturer the evidence related to
testing and retain it in his technical file for a minimum of 10 years after ceasing production of the assembled
product.
Only one ITT is required where different manufacturing units are producing the same doorsets / openable
windows for the same manufacturer using the same materials and documented production and process
control.
For prototypes, an initial type test only by the manufacturer is insufficient with regard to the implications of
fire resistance and/or smoke control. Conformity by a Notified Body must be based on an initial type test,
see 7.8.
7.2.2 Use of historical data
Tests previously performed in accordance with the performance characteristics of this document (same type
of doorsets / openable windows, same characteristic(s), test method, sampling procedure, system of
attestation of conformity, etc.) may be taken into account.
7.2.3 Treatment of calculated values and design
In those cases where conformity with this standard is based on calculations, type testing will be limited to the
verification of the calculations made and that the resulting doorsets / openable windows correspond to the
descriptions / assumptions made in the design and/or calculations.
7.2.4 Further type testing
Whenever a change occurs in the doorsets / openable windows design, the material, component supplier or
the production process, which would change significantly one or more of the characteristics which is not
covered by the rules for direct or extended application of test results, the type test shall be repeated for the
appropriate characteristic(s).
7.2.5 Testing of doorsets on escape routes
Pedestrian doorsets / openable windows intended for installation on escape routes shall be checked by a
notified body for evidence of compliance with the manufacturer’s documentation and evidence of operability
and durability.
7.3 Sampling and testing
7.3.1 Selection of samples
Specimens to be used for ITT testing shall be samples of doors representative for the manufactured
doorsets / openable windows type or family of doorsets / openable windows in regard of a specific
characteristic and selected in such a way that the test results are valid for the doorsets / openable windows
type or family.
The test specimen shall be fully representative of the doorsets / openable windows intended for use in
practice, including any appropriate surface finishes, elements of building hardware and fittings, as these are
an essential part of the test specimen and may influence its behaviour in the test.
prEN 16034:2009 (E)
Guidance on the selection of test specimens is given in EN 14600 and the prEN 15629 series of extended
application standards.
Before the test, the manufacturer shall provide a specification to a level of detail sufficient to allow a detailed
examination of the test specimen and to agree the accuracy of the information supplied. As a minimum this
shall include a parts list and drawings giving materials, dimensions, mounting and fixing methods for all
component parts.
When the method of construction precludes a detailed survey of the test specimen without having to
permanently damage it, or if it is considered that it will subsequently be impossible to evaluate construction
details from a post test examination, then one of two options shall be exercised, either:
a) a request to oversee the manufacture of the doorsets / openable windows which is to be the subject
of the test, or
b) the manufacturer may be requested to supply and additional test specimen or that part of the test
specimen which cannot be verified (e. g. a door leaf) to the number required for testing.
NOTE For further information see EN 1634-1.
Where a range of tests is to be carried out a sufficient number of samples shall be selected to take account
of the destructive nature of the tests.
7.3.2 Marking of samples
All samples to be used for testing purposes shall be suitably marked to identify which characteristics are to
be determined and to ensure traceability. Sample-marking shall at least include production place and date
and time of sampling.
7.3.3 Sampling report
A sampling report shall be prepared by the sampler (manufacturer or Notified Body) to accompany the
sample(s) selected which shall include the following information:
- Manufacturer and manufacturing plant;
- Place of sampling;
- Stock or batch quantity (from which the samples have been taken), if necessary;
- Number of samples;
- Identification or description of the samples(s) (e.g. detailed technical drawings, a complete parts list);
- Marking of the sample(s) by the sampler;
- Purpose of test (e.g. initial type test);
- Characteristics to be determined and clear identification of which sample(s) to be used for the required
characteristic(s), where necessary;
- Place and date;
- Signature of the sampler and/or the manufacturer.
7.3.4 Retention of samples
Used samples (test specimens) shall be indelibly marked as already tested. Samples shall be retained until
the test report has been finalised. The manufacturer shall be responsible for the retention and disposal of
samples in accordance with his written procedures.
prEN 16034:2009 (E)
7.4 Testing
Testing shall be in accordance with the appropriate test method, identified in this standard, for the declared
characteristic.
The manufacturer shall keep records of the tests specified above. These records shall at least include the
following information:
