Overview
EN 13750:2002 is the CEN European standard that defines safety and performance requirements and test methods for domestic water kettles used on top of a stove, cooker or hob. It applies to all non‑electric kettles regardless of material or method of manufacture. The standard covers construction, materials, furniture (handles/knobs), coatings and required product information, and includes normative test procedures in its annexes.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & exclusions: Applies only to stovetop kettles; electric kettles are excluded.
- Materials: Materials must present no toxic hazards or adverse organoleptic effects under normal use.
- Construction & watertightness: Kettle body, spout and base (if not integral) must be leakproof up to and including boiling. Kettle must remain stable when filled and tested.
- Handles, knobs & furniture:
- Handle and knob materials must remain rigid to specified elevated temperatures (see referenced EN 12983‑1).
- Fatigue resistance: handle assemblies shall withstand 15 000 cycles without visible distortion or loosening (Annex B).
- Thermal hazard limits when tested (Annex C): uncoated metal ≤ 55 °C; plastics ≤ 70 °C; wood ≤ 89 °C; ceramic/glass/stone ≤ 66 °C. Kettles failing thermal tests must carry a warning.
- Lid, whistle & pouring:
- Lid must stay seated when tilted 90° from horizontal.
- Whistle must remain secure during boiling/whistling.
- Pouring test (Annex A) requires clean flow from the spout with no continuous dribbling.
- Dimensional & capacity tolerances:
- Any claimed diameter must be within ±5 mm of measured diameter.
- Actual capacity must be at least the claimed capacity.
- Coatings:
- Vitreous enamel: limits on weight loss after boiling and impact resistance per ISO 2744 and ISO 4532.
- Adhesion on aluminium: maximum exposed base metal specified (Annex D).
- Hard anodised aluminium: minimum average thickness and stain/alkali resistance are required (measurement referenced to EN ISO 2064 and EN ISO 2360); hardness requirement for “hard anodised” coatings is specified.
- Product information: Point‑of‑sale labelling must indicate type/material/capacity, suitable heating sources, and manufacturer/importer identification. Care and use instructions are required.
