Overview
EN ISO 13295:2007 - Dentistry - Mandrels for rotary instruments (ISO 13295:2007) specifies requirements, packaging and marking for mandrels used with discs and polishers in dentistry. The standard defines mandrel types, material and mechanical properties, dimensional requirements and minimum labelling information. It uses the ISO 6360 coding system (a 15‑digit identification number) to identify rotary dental instruments and supports interchangeability and traceability of mandrels and rotary accessories.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Mandrels suitable for discs and polishers used in dentistry; intended to standardize support shafts for rotary instruments.
- Classification: Five mandrel types by application/mechanical properties:
- Type 1 - standard mandrel
- Type 2 - reinforced mandrel
- Type 3 - mandrel with cylindrical thread (for unmounted polishers)
- Type 4 - mandrel with conical thread (for unmounted polishers)
- Type 5 - mandrel for snap‑on polishers
- Material / Mechanical requirements:
- Types 1–4 and associated screws: proof strength (Rp0.2) ≥ 600 MPa (tested per ISO 6892).
- Type 5: minimum Vickers hardness 250 N/mm².
- Dimensions:
- Detailed dimensional specifications and tolerances are given (figures in the standard) - plate/screw head diameter typically 5 mm (other diameters allowed at manufacturer’s discretion).
- Shanks conform to ISO 1797‑1 where applicable.
- Run‑out and dimensional testing referenced to ISO 8325:2004.
- Testing:
- Mechanical testing per ISO 6892 (tensile/proof strength) and dimensional/run‑out testing per ISO 8325.
- Labelling / Packaging:
- Package labelling must include: manufacturer/trademark, lot number, shank type (ISO 1797‑1), ISO 6360 encoded characteristics (general and shape/specific), and plate diameter (if applicable).
- Packaging method left to manufacturer discretion.
Applications and users
- Who uses it:
- Dental instrument manufacturers and suppliers (design, production, quality control)
- Dental laboratories and clinics (procurement/specification)
- Regulatory and compliance teams ensuring CE/national conformity
- Test laboratories performing mechanical and dimensional checks
- Practical value:
- Ensures interchangeability and safe use of mandrels with discs and polishers.
- Provides clear material and testing criteria to reduce failure risk during clinical use.
- Supports traceability via ISO 6360 coding for inventory, procurement and regulatory documentation.

ISO 13295:2007(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 13295 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 106, Dentistry, Subcommittee SC 4, Dental
