Non-destructive testing - Visual testing - General principles
This European Standard specifies the general principles for visual testing both directly and remotely when it is used to determine the compliance of a product with specified requirements (e.g. surface condition of the part, alignment of mating surfaces, shape of part).
This European Standard does not apply to viewing activities linked to the use of any other destructive or non-destructive test method.

Overview
EN 13018:2016 (CEN) specifies the general principles for non-destructive visual testing used to determine product compliance with specified requirements, for example surface condition, alignment of mating surfaces and shape. The standard covers both direct visual testing (uninterrupted optical path) and remote visual testing (interrupted optical path, photography/video/endoscopes). It does not apply to viewing activities that are part of other NDT or destructive test methods.
This standard is intended to ensure consistent, auditable visual inspection practices across manufacturing and service environments by defining minimum requirements for procedures, personnel, illumination and documentation.
Key Topics
- Scope and applicability: Visual testing to verify conformity of parts and assemblies (surface condition, alignment, geometry). Excludes viewing tied to other NDT or destructive methods.
- Pre-test documentation: Written instructions or procedures must state minimum testing requirements and consider object geometry, accessibility, extent of coverage, surface condition and acceptance criteria. A demonstration test piece should be used to prove the procedure.
- Direct visual testing: Typically applicable when the observer’s eye can be within 600 mm of the surface and at an angle not less than 30°; aids such as mirrors, magnifiers, endoscopes and fibre optics may be employed. Recommended illumination minima are provided: generally 160 lx for general visual testing and 500 lx for local visual testing.
- Remote visual testing: Applied when direct viewing is impractical. Systems such as endoscopes or cameras must be proven suitable for the task and meet the procedure’s image-recording standards.
- Personnel: Inspectors must be familiar with the standard, procedures and relevant manufacturing/operating conditions. Vision requirements reference EN ISO 9712 and EN ISO 8596; far vision for general testing shall meet the specified optotype standard and be checked at least every 12 months.
- Evaluation and reporting: Tests are evaluated against specified acceptance criteria. When required, post-test reports must include method, equipment, findings, extent of coverage and signatures.
Applications
- Routine inspection of finished parts and assemblies to confirm surface condition and fit
- Quality assurance checks during manufacture and after maintenance
- Remote inspection of confined, complex or hazardous areas using endoscopes, cameras or robotic systems
- Preparation of auditable records for contracts and product standards
Related Standards
- EN 1330-10 - Terms used in visual testing
- EN ISO 8596 - Visual acuity testing (optotype presentation)
- EN ISO 9712 - Qualification and certification of NDT personnel
Practical value: EN 13018:2016 provides a clear, implementable framework for establishing consistent visual testing programs, setting illumination and vision requirements, proving procedures with demonstration pieces, and maintaining traceable documentation for regulatory and contractual compliance.
