Overview
EN 12697-2:2024 specifies a laboratory procedure for the determination of the particle size distribution (PSD) of aggregates recovered from bituminous mixtures by sieving. The test is applied to aggregates obtained after binder extraction in accordance with EN 12697-1 (soluble binder content) or EN 12697-39 (binder content by ignition). The method underpins quality control, mix design and conformance assessment for road construction materials. Note that fibres, non-soluble additives and some binder modifiers can influence the test result.
Key Topics
- Scope: Granulometric analysis of aggregates recovered from bituminous mixtures using sieving and weighing to produce cumulative percentages by mass passing specified sieves.
- Principle: Sieve the recovered, dried aggregate, weigh retained and passing fractions and calculate cumulative PSD values in accordance with EN 933-1.
- Apparatus:
- Use the apparatus required by EN 933-1.
- Sieves with aperture size < 4 mm shall meet ISO 3310-1.
- Sieves with aperture size ≥ 4 mm shall meet ISO 3310-2.
- Sample preparation:
- Test material is the aggregate recovered after EN 12697-1 or EN 12697-39 extraction.
- Visually ensure complete recovery and absence of adhering binder.
- Dry to constant mass at (110 ± 5) °C; particles shall be completely separated. Constant mass is defined as a change < 0.1 % between determinations at least 30 min apart.
- Minimum sample mass: When less material is available than EN 933-1 requires, test the total available amount; the minimum mass is the lesser of 50·D (g) and 1 000 g, where D is the upper sieve size in mm.
- Procedure notes:
- Dry sieving may be acceptable after thorough washing during extraction or after EN 12697-39; if > 1.0 % of total aggregate remains on the centrifuge/filter fraction passing 0.063 mm, re-determine PSD after washing.
- If aggregates appear greasy, a peptizing additive can be used to reduce surface tension.
- Calculation & reporting:
- Calculations follow EN 933-1. Where binder content is determined directly, the standard gives the calculation to derive total mass passing 0.063 mm from sample mass, water, binder and retained fractions.
- Test report shall include reference to EN 12697-2, specimen ID, PSD by mass (0.063 mm to 0.1 %), deviations from procedure and date of test.
- Precision:
- Repeatability standard deviation σ_r = 0.4 % (repeatability r = 1.0 %).
- Reproducibility standard deviation σ_R = 0.6 % (reproducibility R = 1.7 %).
Applications
- Routine quality control of asphalt and bituminous mixtures.
- Verification of aggregate grading following binder extraction.
- Input to pavement mix design and specification compliance checks.
- Laboratory testing within the EN 12697 series and national road materials testing regimes.
