Electrodeposited metallic coatings and related finishes - Sampling procedures for inspection by attributes (ISO 4519:1980)

The sampling plans are applicable to the inspection of end items, components, materials in process and finished products in storage. The plan are intended to be used for a continuing series and lots, but they may also be used for isolated lots. ISO 4510 is not applicable to the sampling and testing of mechanical fasteners having electrodeposited metallic coatings or related finishes. These sampling plans are based on AQL's of 1,5 and 4,0 %.

Overview

EN ISO 4519:2016 (ISO 4519:1980) specifies sampling procedures for inspection by attributes of electrodeposited metallic coatings and related finishes. It provides sampling plans and rules for acceptance/rejection of lots covering end items, components, in‑process materials and stored finished products. Plans are intended for continuing production series but may be applied to isolated lots. Sampling plans are based on AQLs of 1.5% and 4.0% and reference ISO 2859 for general sampling methodology.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and exclusions
    • Applies to electrodeposited coatings and related finishes by agreement between supplier and purchaser.
    • Not applicable to mechanical fasteners having electrodeposited coatings when ISO 3269 procedures apply.
  • Sampling plans
    • Normal inspection plans are provided in tables 1–3:
      • Table 1: visual, dimensional and non‑destructive tests (general production).
      • Table 2: sampling specifically for barrel electroplating.
      • Table 3: sampling for destructive tests (e.g., hydrogen embrittlement, adhesion, corrosion resistance, solderability).
    • Plans are founded on inspection by attributes (defective / non‑defective) and AQL-based acceptance criteria.
  • Defect classification
    • Defines critical, major and minor defects and corresponding classifications for defective units.
    • Specifies acceptance number and rejection number for samples to determine lot acceptability.
  • Lot formation, presentation and resubmission
    • Guidance for forming inspection lots, lot sizes, presentation of lots and procedures for resubmitted lots after corrective action.
  • Reference standards
    • Cross-references ISO 2859 (sampling procedures and tables), ISO 3534 (statistics) and ISO 3269 (fasteners).

Practical applications

  • Use EN ISO 4519:2016 to design and execute sampling inspection programs for electroplated products in:
    • Quality control in plating shops and metal finishers
    • Incoming inspection at OEMs and component suppliers
    • In‑process sampling during production runs
    • Acceptance testing of stored finished goods
  • Applies to visual inspection, dimensional checks, non‑destructive thickness testing and specified destructive tests where sample sizes and acceptance criteria are required.

Who should use this standard

  • Quality managers, inspection engineers and QA laboratories in electroplating and surface‑finishing industries
  • Purchasing and inspection personnel at manufacturers and assemblers using electrodeposited coatings
  • Test laboratories performing attribute inspections or destructive testing on coated parts

Related standards

Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of
national standards institutes (IS0 member bodies). The work of developing Inter-
national Standards is carried out through IS0 technical committees. Every member
body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been set up has the
right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by
the IS0 Council.
