Overview
EN 4002:2007 (CEN) defines the requirements for aerospace series aluminium alloy AL-P2219-T81 in the form of sheet and strip with thicknesses from 0.5 mm to 6 mm. This European Standard is part of the EN metallic material standards for aerospace applications and references general organization and product-specific rules such as EN 4258, EN 4400-2 and EN 4500-2.
The standard covers designation, production form, delivery conditions, heat treatments, mechanical and chemical requirements, and inspection practices relevant to aircraft components where AL-P2219-T81 is selected for its strength and processing characteristics.
Key Topics
- Material designation and form: Aluminium alloy AL-P2219-T81 - sheet and strip, rolled products.
- Thickness range: 0.5 mm ≤ a ≤ 6 mm.
- Delivery and use conditions: Delivery codes include T31 and T81; the use condition is T81.
- Heat treatment: Solution treatment at
530 °C to 540 °C with water quench (WQ) to ≤ 40 °C, followed by cold work (1%) and artificial aging at 171 °C to 182 °C for 16–20 h (as specified for T81 condition). - Chemical composition: The standard provides alloy element ranges for AL‑P2219 (e.g., Cu as a base alloying element with defined min/max limits) consistent with aerospace alloy specification practice (see EN 4002 tables).
- Mechanical properties: Typical requirements include proof stress (R_p0.2) ≥ 320 MPa and tensile strength ≥ 430 MPa, with specified minimum elongation values depending on thickness (e.g., A ≥ 6 % or A ≥ 7 % for 50 mm gauge).
- Inspection & testing: Dimensional and marking inspections and test piece selection are referenced to EN 4400-2. Product qualification programs are to be agreed between manufacturer and purchaser.
Applications
EN 4002:2007 supports selection and procurement of AL-P2219-T81 for aerospace structural and non-structural parts where a high-strength, heat-treatable aluminium alloy is required. Typical application considerations include:
- Aircraft structural components requiring good tensile strength and toughness.
- Forming and fabrication processes for rolled sheet and strip in thickness range 0.5–6 mm.
- Parts subject to defined heat-treatment cycles and post-treatment property verification.
Benefits for specifiers and manufacturers:
- Clear, harmonized material and inspection requirements for cross-border procurement in CEN member states.
- Reduced ambiguity in delivery conditions, mechanical acceptance criteria and testing procedures.
Related Standards
- EN 4258 - organization of aerospace metallic material standards and links between EN types.
- EN 4400-2 - technical specification for aluminium and aluminium alloy sheet and strip (referenced for tests, specimens and inspection rules).
- EN 4500-2 - rules for drafting and presentation for aluminium alloy material standards.
For procurement, certification and qualification actions, consult EN 4400-2 and coordinate product qualification programmes between manufacturer and purchaser as indicated in EN 4002:2007.
