Overview

EN 3997:2015 (CEN) is a European aerospace material standard that specifies requirements for aluminium alloy AL‑P2024 (Al Cu4Mg1) in the T3 temper, supplied as sheet and strip with thicknesses 0.4 mm ≤ a ≤ 6 mm. Prepared by ASD‑STAN and approved by CEN, this standard is intended for aerospace applications where controlled chemical composition, processing, mechanical performance and test methods are required.

Key topics and requirements

  • Material designation: AL‑P2024 (Al Cu4Mg1) - temper T3 (solution heat treated, water quenched, natural aging).
  • Form & production: Rolled sheet and strip; thickness range 0.4–6 mm.
  • Heat treatment / delivery condition: Solution temperature 490 °C – 500 °C, water quench to ≤ 40 °C, natural aging ≥ 5 days; slight levelling permitted.
  • Chemical composition: Limits for Si, Fe, Cu, Mn, Mg, Cr, Zn, Ti and Al are defined in the standard (see EN 3997 for full tables).
  • Mechanical properties (typical requirement summary):
    • Proof stress Rp0.2: generally ≥ 325 MPa (longitudinal), ≥ 290 MPa (transverse) depending on thickness.
    • Tensile strength Rm: generally ≥ 440 MPa (some thicker ranges ≥ 450 MPa).
    • Elongation A (50 mm): ≥ 15% across thickness ranges.
  • Other characteristics: bending performance, fatigue and crack propagation data (specified test directions and limits), intergranular corrosion penetration depth limits, electrical conductivity (typical value ~19 MS/m), marking and dimensional inspection rules.
  • Testing & inspection: Refers to EN 4400‑2 for technical specification, test pieces, sampling, product qualification and inspection procedures.

Applications and users

EN 3997 targets the aerospace supply chain and materials engineering functions that require a consistent specification for 2024‑T3 aluminium sheet and strip. Typical users include:

  • Aircraft OEMs and tier‑1/2 suppliers specifying structural skins, stiffeners and components where 2xxx‑series high‑strength aluminium is appropriate;
  • Material engineers and designers selecting alloys for strength-to-weight critical parts;
  • Procurement and quality departments issuing purchase specifications and verifying supplier compliance;
  • Test laboratories performing mechanical, corrosion and fatigue testing per aerospace requirements.

Related standards

  • EN 4400‑2 - Aerospace series: Aluminium and aluminium alloy wrought products - Technical specification (Sheet and strip)
  • EN 4258 - Organisation of aerospace metallic material standards
  • EN 4500‑2 - Rules for drafting/presentation of aluminium/magnesium alloy material standards
