Overview

EN 4001:2007 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the technical and quality requirements for Aluminium alloy AL-P2024-T351 clad sheet and strip with enhanced chemical milling capability, specifically for aerospace applications. The standard applies to products with a thickness range between 1.6 mm and 6 mm. This aluminum alloy is notable for its high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance, making it ideal for critical aerospace components.

This standard ensures that the material meets strict criteria regarding chemical composition, mechanical properties, residual stress, and surface quality, thus facilitating reliable performance in aerospace manufacturing processes that involve chemical milling.

Key Topics

  • Material Composition
The standard defines the chemical composition limits for Aluminium alloy AL-P2024-T351, emphasizing controlled levels of copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), magnesium (Mg), and other elements to ensure optimal mechanical and chemical characteristics.

  • Cladding and Strip Thickness
It covers clad sheet and strip products with thicknesses between 1.6 mm and 6 mm, suitable for aerospace structural parts requiring precision and durability.

  • Improved Chemical Milling Capability
The standard requires manufacturing processes that minimize residual stresses pivotal for chemical milling-a process used to remove material selectively without compromising the integrity or dimensions of aerospace components.

  • Mechanical Properties
    Key mechanical properties include:

    • Proof stress (Rp0.2) ≥ 280 MPa
    • Tensile strength (Rm) ≥ 430 MPa (depending on thickness)
    • Elongation (A) ≥ 14%
These are vital for ensuring durability under operational stresses.
  • Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
The alloy is supplied under heat treatment condition T351, which involves controlled stretching and aging to achieve the required mechanical and residual stress properties.

  • Testing and Inspection
The standard mandates rigorous testing for intergranular corrosion, chemical millability, residual stress measurement, dimensional accuracy, and batch uniformity according to referenced standards EN 4400-2 and EN 4258.

Applications

EN 4001:2007 aluminum alloy AL-P2024-T351 clad sheets and strips are primarily used in the aerospace industry where lightweight, strength, and chemical machinability are critical. Typical applications include:

  • Aircraft structural components
  • Aerospace skin panels
  • Chemical milled parts requiring precise material removal
  • Lightweight aerospace assemblies demanding reliable corrosion resistance and strength under fatigue

This material standard supports manufacturers in producing components that meet stringent aerospace certification requirements, thus ensuring safety, performance, and longevity.

Related Standards

  • EN 4400-2: Aerospace series - Aluminium and aluminium alloy wrought products - Technical specification for sheet and strip.
  • EN 4258: General organization of metallic material standards for aerospace applications.
  • EN 4500-2: Rules for drafting and presentation of material standards for aluminium alloys, ensuring consistent specification across aerospace materials.

These related standards complement EN 4001:2007 by defining detailed testing methods, production protocols, and quality assurance processes for aerospace-grade aluminium alloys, facilitating uniformity in aerospace manufacturing.
