Overview

EN 2591-205:1996 defines a standardized test method for measuring electrical continuity (resistance) of housings (shells) used in elements of electrical and optical connection in aerospace applications. Issued by CEN and referenced in the SIST adoption, this part is intended to be used together with EN 2591. The standard focuses on verifying conductive continuity of connector shells and is not applicable to checks for magnetic or radiofrequency shielding performance.

This test method helps manufacturers, assemblers, and inspectors confirm that connector housings provide the intended electrical path for grounding and structural continuity, supporting safety and reliability across aerospace electrical systems.

Key Topics

  • Scope and applicability: Measurement of housing (shell) electrical continuity for elements of connection; limited to continuity/resistance checks, excluding magnetic and RFI shielding tests.
  • Purpose: Verify conductive integrity of connector housings to ensure proper grounding and assembly quality.
  • Test usage: Intended to be applied in production verification, incoming inspection, and maintenance checks in combination with other EN 2591 parts.
  • Limitations: Does not address electromagnetic shielding performance; supplementary standards are required for EMI/RFI verification.

Applications

EN 2591-205 is practically applied in several aerospace contexts where connector shell continuity is critical:

  • Manufacturing QA: Routine batch and final inspection of connector housings to confirm resistance values meet acceptance criteria defined by component specifications.
  • Incoming inspection: Verification of supplier parts to ensure housings provide continuous conductive paths before assembly.
  • Maintenance and overhaul: Field or depot testing of connectors after repair or refurbishment to confirm shell continuity has been restored or maintained.
  • Assembly verification: Post-assembly checks to ensure mating and fastening methods produce the required conductive shell contact for grounding.

Benefits include improved grounding reliability, reduced risk of intermittent connections due to poor shell contact, and a clear, repeatable method for acceptance testing.

Related Standards

  • EN 2591 (series) - General series for elements of electrical and optical connection; EN 2591-205 is a part of this family and should be used in conjunction with other parts as applicable.
  • National adoptions - e.g., SIST EN 2591-205:2001 (Slovenian adoption), which reproduces the EN text for national use.

For implementation, combine EN 2591-205 measurements with relevant assembly, environmental and EMC/EMI standards where shielding, vibration or environmental performance must also be demonstrated. This ensures a comprehensive verification program for aerospace connector reliability and safety.
