Overview
EN ISO 7786:2001 (approved by CEN as EN ISO 7786) is the international standard that specifies dimensional, material and quality requirements for dental rotary laboratory abrasive instruments. It defines the commonly used shapes, required dimensions, shank type and performance limits to ensure safe, interchangeable and consistently manufactured grinding instruments for dental laboratories.
This standard covers: materials for the working part, shank requirements, six common shapes of ceramic-bonded abrasives, dimensional tolerances, run-out limits, test procedures, sampling (AQL) and manufacturer instructions, marking and labelling.
Key Topics
Shapes and dimensions: The standard specifies the six most commonly available working-part shapes (for example spherical, truncated conical, cylindrical, inverted conical, knife-edge and variations). Nominal diameters and working lengths are given in millimetres, with permissible tolerances.
Materials: The working part shall be made of abrasive materials (selection and treatment are left to the manufacturer). The shank material must comply with ISO 1797-1 (Type 2 shanks).
Run-out: A critical performance requirement; the run-out of the working part shall not exceed 0,3 mm. Measurement procedures are referenced to ISO 8325.
Test and measurement: Shapes and dimensions are determined using a shadowgraph or measurement techniques in accordance with ISO 8325. Run-out testing also follows ISO 8325 methods.
Quality control and sampling: Acceptance quality level (AQL) for lot inspection is specified as 6,5, with sampling procedures referenced to ISO 2859-1.
Manufacturer requirements: EN ISO 7786:2001 requires manufacturers to provide instructions, marking on instruments and labelling on packaging to support safe use and traceability.
Applications
- Ensures interchangeability of laboratory abrasive rotary instruments across laboratories and suppliers.
- Supports safety and performance by limiting run-out and enforcing dimensional tolerances.
- Used by dental laboratories, dental technicians, instrument manufacturers and quality engineers involved in procurement, inspection and product compliance.
- Facilitates consistent labelling and documentation for inventory control and regulatory compliance.
Related Standards
- ISO 1797-1 - Shank types for dental rotary instruments (shank material and dimensions).
- ISO 8325 - Test methods for dental rotary instruments (shapes, dimensions, run-out measurement).
- ISO 2859-1 - Sampling procedures and AQL for lot-by-lot inspection.
- ISO 6360-2 - Number coding system for dental rotary instrument shapes and characteristics.
EN ISO 7786:2001 is a practical reference for manufacturers and laboratories that need clear, standardized specifications for ceramic-bonded laboratory abrasives used in dental grinding operations. It provides measurable acceptance criteria and links to test methods and sampling plans to support consistent quality control.
