Short link chain for lifting purposes - Safety - Part 4: Chain slings - Grade 8

This European Standard specifies the requirements related to safety, methods of rating and testing of single-, two-, three-, four-leg and endless chain slings assembled by:    a) mechanical joining devices;   b) welding.   using short link grade 8 medium tolerance lifting chain conforming to EN 818-2 together with the appropriate range of components of the same grade.   Note: Instructions for use and maintenance of chain slings are covered by prEN 818-6.  The hazards covered by this European Standard are identified in clause 4.  Bases for the calculation of working load limits are given in Annex B.  Annex C gives an example of a designation system for chain slings.

Overview

EN 818-4:1996/prA1 - Short link chain for lifting purposes - Safety - Part 4: Chain slings - Grade 8 is a CEN European Standard that specifies safety, rating and testing requirements for chain slings made from short-link Grade 8 medium-tolerance lifting chain. The standard covers single-, two-, three-, four-leg and endless chain slings assembled by:

  • mechanical joining devices, or
  • welding,

using chain conforming to EN 818-2 together with compatible Grade 8 components. The amendment (prA1) updates terms, marking, verification and annex status and aligns references with EN ISO risk and machine-safety standards.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and definitions - Terms and symbols referenced from EN 818-1 and specific definitions for chain slings, master links, joining links and mechanical joining devices.
  • Hazard identification - Hazards associated with chain slings are identified (clause 4) and linked to required safety provisions.
  • Design, construction and working load rating (WLL) - Requirements for safe design and calculation of working load limits; Annex B gives bases for WLL calculation.
  • Assembly methods - Requirements for slings assembled by mechanical joining devices or by welding, using short-link Grade 8 chain (EN 818-2).
  • Verification and testing - Mandatory verification of safety requirements, testing by a competent person, and requirements for static tensile test machines (normative Annex D).
  • Marking and identification - Each chain sling shall be marked (metal tag or permanent label) with essential data; Annex D is normative and specifies identification tag contents and format.
  • Manufacturer documentation - Manufacturer’s certificate and required information for use and maintenance (clause 9 renamed “Information”); note: prEN 818-6 covers detailed instructions for use/maintenance.
  • Annexes - Annex B (WLL calculation bases), Annex C (example designation system for chain slings), Annex D (normative identification tags and test-machine requirements), Annex ZA (relationship with EU Machinery Directive).

Practical applications and users

This standard is essential for:

  • Manufacturers of chain slings and lifting assemblies using Grade 8 short-link chain
  • Inspection and testing bodies validating WLL and safety verification
  • Rigging, lifting and rigging engineers specifying slings for load-handling operations
  • Safety managers and procurement teams ensuring compliance with EU machinery and lifting safety requirements

By following EN 818-4:1996/prA1, organizations ensure consistent rating, traceability (marking/tags), and verified testing of Grade 8 chain slings for safe lifting operations.

Related standards

  • EN 818-1 (terms and definitions)
  • EN 818-2 (short-link chain specifications for lifting - Grade 8)
  • prEN 818-6 (information for use and maintenance)
  • EN ISO 12100-1 / EN ISO 12100-2 (machine safety - risk assessment)
  • EU Machinery Directive (relationship described in Annex ZA)
