Overview

EN 754-3:2008 - Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Cold drawn rod/bar and tube - Part 3: Round bars, tolerances on dimensions and form - is a CEN standard that defines dimensional and form tolerances for cold drawn aluminium round bars. It applies to cold drawn round bars with diameters from 3 mm up to and including 100 mm and uses temper designations given in EN 515. The standard is intended for manufacturers, purchasers and quality inspectors who need consistent acceptance criteria for aluminium round bars.

Key topics

  • Scope and applicability
    • Covers cold drawn aluminium and aluminium-alloy round bars (3 mm ≤ D ≤ 100 mm).
    • Tempers referenced from EN 515.
  • Diameter tolerances
    • Specified in the standard’s Table 1. These tolerances define allowable deviation from nominal diameter for each diameter range.
  • Length tolerances
    • Fixed length supply must be stated in the order; fixed length tolerances are given in Table 2.
    • If no fixed or minimum length is specified, bars may be supplied in random lengths with lengths/tolerances to be agreed between supplier and purchaser.
  • Squareness of cut ends
    • Squareness tolerance is defined as half the fixed length tolerance range (applies to both fixed and random lengths).
  • Form tolerances
    • Ovality: defined as the difference between maximum and minimum diameters measured in one cross-section. Maximum permissible ovality is 50% of the diameter tolerance range specified in Table 1.
    • Straightness: measured with the bar on a horizontal base plate against a straight edge (see Figure 1). Straightness tolerances (per metre and localized kink limits) are provided in Table 3.
    • Special cases: for diameters < 10 mm, straightness tolerances are to be agreed between supplier and purchaser. Straightness tolerances do not automatically apply to tempers O and Tx51 unless agreed.

Applications

  • Ensures consistent quality control for cold drawn aluminium round bars used in machining, automotive components, structural parts, fasteners and precision engineering.
  • Used by:
    • Manufacturers for production tolerancing and QA.
    • Purchasing/procurement to specify acceptance criteria.
    • Inspection and testing labs for dimensional verification.
    • Designers to select appropriate stock tolerances for downstream processing.

Related standards

  • EN 515 - Wrought aluminium and aluminium alloys: temper designations (referenced for tempers).
  • Other parts of EN 754 series (Parts 1, 2, 4–8) cover inspection/delivery, mechanical properties and tolerances for different bar/tube shapes.

EN 754-3:2008 is essential when you need defined tolerances on dimensions and form for cold drawn aluminium round bars to support reliable manufacture, inspection and procurement.
