Pigments and extenders - Methods of dispersion for assessment of dispersion characteristics - Part 3: Dispersion using a high-speed impeller mill (ISO 8780-3:1990)
This method is restricted to mill bases of moderately high viscosity due to either high binder concentration and/or high pigment concentration which produces high shear forces. This part is for use in conjunction with the methods of assessment described in ISO 8781, using an agreed binder system. For any particular application, the test methods specified need to be completed by supplementary information. The items are given in the annex.

Overview
EN ISO 8780-3:1995 (identical to ISO 8780-3:1990) defines a laboratory method for dispersing pigments and extenders using a high-speed impeller mill to assess their dispersion characteristics. The procedure is intended for mill bases of moderately high viscosity (high binder and/or pigment concentration producing high shear). It is designed to be used with the assessment methods in ISO 8781 and requires agreed supplementary information (Annex A) for specific applications. This part is for laboratory evaluation and is not a direct recipe for scaling to full production mills.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Dispersion using a horizontal disc (impeller) mill; suitable for pre-dispersing or partially dispersing pigments prior to further milling.
- Apparatus: High-speed impeller mill with a disc (often serrated) and motor drive; adjustable height and clamping for concentric alignment; optional temperature control (double-walled vessel).
- Vessel/disc geometry: Specified relative dimensions (disc diameter d):
- Vessel diameter: ~1.3 d to 3 d
- Clearance between disc plane and vessel base: ~0.25 d to 0.5 d
- Mill base depth: ~0.5 d to 2 d
- Operating speed: Peripheral disc speed adjustable in the laboratory range (typically 5 m/s to 20 m/s); disc type, vessel geometry and speed must be agreed and recorded.
- Mill base: High-viscosity mill base needed to create a toroidal flow; pigment and binder concentrations chosen by prior experiment to produce the correct flow pattern.
- Procedure highlights:
- Sampling per ISO 842
- Pre-mixing at reduced speed to wet pigment (~5 min), incorporating pigment so some remains visible
- Dispersion at agreed speed with test portions taken at agreed stirring times (examples: 4, 8, 16, 32 min)
- Stabilization and de-aeration procedures as required and agreed
- Reporting: Must include product ID, reference to the standard, supplementary information from Annex A, any deviations and test dates.
Applications and users
- Primary users: Pigment and extender manufacturers, paint and coatings formulators, R&D labs, quality control and materials testing laboratories.
- Practical uses:
- Compare dispersibility and performance of pigments in a standardized laboratory mill
- Pre-disperse samples before bead-milling or attritor processing
- Evaluate effects of binder systems, pigment loading, and formulation on tinting strength, grind fineness, and gloss (used in conjunction with ISO 8781 test methods)
- Establish repeatable laboratory procedures for QA and R&D comparisons
- Benefits: Reproducible small-batch testing, controlled shear conditions, objective comparison of pigment dispersibility.

IS0 8780-3:1990(E) Foreword IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0 technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, govern- mental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0 collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an lnter- national Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote. International Standard IS0 8780-3 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and varnishes. IS0 8780 consists of the following parts, under the general title Pigments and extenders - Methods of dispersion for assessment of dispersion characteristics: - Part I: introduction - Part 2 Dispersion using an oscillatory shaking machine - Part 3: Dispersion using a high-speed impeller mill - Part 4: Dispersion using a bead mill - Part 5: Dispersion using an automatic muller - Part 6: Dispersion using a triple-roll mill Annex A forms an inteqral part of this part of IS0 8780. Pigments and extenders - Methods of ispersion for assessment of dispersion characteristics - Part 3: Dispersion using a high--speed impeller mill 1 Scope This part of IS0 8780 specifies a method for the dis- persion of pigments and extenders using a high- speed impeller mill. It is for use in conjunction with the methods of assessment described in IS0 8781, using an agreed binder system. It should be read in conjunction with IS0 8780-I. NOTE 1 A high-speed impeller mill may be used either to disperse a pigment fully or partially as a preliminary to further dispersion using other equipment, for example sand or bead mills or attritors. This method is restricted to mill bases of moderately high viscosity due to either high binder concen- tration and/or high pigment concentration which produces high shear forces. It is not intended to provide a means of formulating full-scale mill base compositions (scaling up the process from labora- tory equipment to factory mills is not simple). 2 Normative references The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text. constitute provisions of this part of IS0 8780. At the time of publication, the editions indicated were valid. All standards are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this part of IS0 8780 are encouraged to investi- gate the possibility of applying the most recent edi- tions of the standards indicated below.
