Overview
EN 2591-228:2018 is a CEN aerospace test method that specifies how to measure the ferrule withdrawal force between an optical contact ferrule and a resilient alignment sleeve inside an aerospace connector. Intended for resilient alignment sleeve qualification, this part must be used together with EN 2591-100 (general test conditions). The procedure quantifies the breakaway frictional force that affects optical contact and mating contact force in fibre‑optic connectors.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Measures breakaway friction between ferrule and sleeve; suitable for qualification of resilient alignment sleeves.
- Specimen preparation:
- Test under standard conditions as defined in EN 2591-100.
- Specimens and gauge pins must be perfectly clean and dry; wipe cleaning recommended (avoid moistening wipes; if moistening used, no alcohol).
- Wear gloves to avoid grease contamination; precondition at 40 °C for 30 min if moistening was used, then return to ambient for at least 30 min.
- Apparatus:
- Force generator producing a continuously increasing force with a force gauge recording force vs displacement. Loading rates of ~100 mm/min are generally acceptable.
- Test assembly with a flexible member to avoid bending loads.
- Pair of gauge pins inserted to meet at the sleeve centre.
- Gauge pin requirements (Zirconia sleeves):
- Surface finish (Ra) and roundness controls, chamfer and diameter tolerances are specified in the standard or product specification.
- Testing and calculation:
- Zero indicator for assembly weight; apply continuously increasing force.
- Remove nonlinear regions; use a linear area X (default 50%) of the measured range.
- Withdrawal force formula: WF = (F3 + F4)/2 + (F3 − F4)/2X (reduces to WF = (3·F3 − F4)/2 if X = 50%).
- Typical protocol: three measurements from both sleeve ends, discard outliers, use mean from the higher‑value end; 30 samples recommended for characterization.
- Influencing factors (Annex A): pin gauge tolerance, apparatus alignment, crosshead velocity, system stiffness, cleaning, humidity and airflow.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Intended users: aerospace connector designers, manufacturers, quality/qualification engineers, test laboratories, and suppliers of alignment sleeves and ferrules.
- Practical uses: product qualification, incoming inspection, design validation, failure analysis, and acceptance testing to ensure reliable optical contact and low insertion loss in aerospace and defence optical connectors.
