Overview
EN 10162:2003 - Cold rolled steel sections: Technical delivery conditions - Dimensional and cross‑sectional tolerances defines the dimensional and cross‑sectional tolerances for cold‑rolled steel sections manufactured on roll‑forming machines. The standard covers typical section shapes (L, U, C, Z, Omega) and split tubes, for both standard and special applications. It applies to sections made from steels referenced in related standards such as EN 10025, EN 10142 and EN 10147 and specifies how products are designated, delivered, tested and documented.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope & exclusion: Applies to cold‑rolled sections produced by roll‑forming. Does not apply to drawn, pressed or folded cold‑formed sections, cold‑rolled piling, or sections covered by special standards.
- Section types: Rectangular L, U, C, Z, Omega cross sections and split tubes; special sections for building frames, door frames, rolling stock, automotive and bridge engineering.
- Designation rules: How to specify form, outer dimensions, wall thickness, edge type (e.g. mill or sheared), length description (standard/fixed/exact), steel grade and applicable steel standard.
- Dimensional and cross‑sectional tolerances: Requirements for thickness, cross‑section geometry, lengths, straightness, twist, concavity/convexity and mass are defined to ensure interchangeability and predictable performance.
- Radii & form details: Inside bending radii and alternative shapes for special sections (see normative Annex A and informative Annex B).
- Delivery & testing: Includes supply and edge conditions, length and end conditions, delivered quantities, test requirements (mechanical, dimensional, surface), sampling, retest procedures and material test certificates (per EN 10204 concepts).
- Marking, packing & transport: Identification, packing, surface protection, storage and transport recommendations as part of delivery conditions.
Practical applications and users
EN 10162 is used by:
- Roll‑forming manufacturers to define production tolerances and product designation.
- Steel fabricators and structural engineers specifying sections for buildings, bridges, rail vehicles and automotive components.
- Purchasers and quality inspectors verifying delivered dimensions, mass and certificates.
- Specifiers and architects requiring consistent section geometry for assembly and detailing.
Typical applications include general structural components, framing systems, profiles for door/window frames, and specialized profiles for rolling stock and bridge elements.
