Overview - EN ISO 105-E09:2010 (Colour fastness to potting)
EN ISO 105-E09:2010 is the ISO/CEN test method for determining the resistance of textile colours to the action of boiling water (commonly called potting or decatissage). The standard specifies a reproducible laboratory procedure, primarily applicable to wool and textiles containing wool, for assessing both change in the sample colour and staining of adjacent fabrics after treatment in boiling water.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Method for colour fastness to boiling water for textiles of all kinds, mainly wool.
- Specimens: Fabric, yarn (knitted or layered), or loose fibre assembled between two adjacent fabrics to form a composite specimen.
- Adjacent fabrics: Use wool adjacent fabric (ISO 105‑F01) and a second adjacent fabric selected according to the tested fibre (ISO 105‑F02 to F07); Table 1 in the standard defines matching pairs (e.g., cotton ↔ wool).
- Apparatus:
- Vessel with reflux condenser to hold a cylindrical specimen.
- Glass rod (5–8 mm diameter) for rolling the specimen.
- Grey scales for assessing change and staining (ISO 105‑A02 and A03).
- Optional instrumental measurement: spectrophotometer or colorimeter (ISO 105‑A04, A05).
- Reagents: Grade 3 water meeting ISO 3696.
- Procedure:
- Assemble composite specimen (40 ± 2 mm × 100 ± 2 mm), roll tightly around glass rod to 40 ± 2 mm length.
- Boil under reflux for 1 hour at a liquor ratio of 30:1.
- Dry (air or ≤60 °C) and assess change in colour and staining using grey scales and/or instrumental methods.
- Reporting: Include reference to ISO 105‑E09:2010, sample identification, numerical grey-scale ratings and/or instrumental results for change and staining, and any deviations.
Applications - who uses this standard
- Quality control and R&D laboratories in the textile and apparel industry.
- Wool processors, dye manufacturers and finishers validating dyeing and finishing processes.
- Certification bodies and compliance testing labs assessing product durability against hot-water exposure (e.g., industrial finishing, laundering, or finishing processes involving high temperatures).
- Textile formulators and designers evaluating compatibility of fibres and colours in blends.
Related standards
- ISO 105 series: A01 (general principles), A02/A03 (grey scales), A04/A05 (instrumental assessment), F01–F07 (adjacent fabrics).
- ISO 3696 (water quality for analytical use).
- ISO 105‑J01 and J03 (colour measurement and ΔE calculations).
Using EN ISO 105-E09:2010 helps ensure consistent, comparable colour fastness testing, supporting product specifications, supplier agreements and regulatory compliance for wool-based textiles.
