Overview

prEN 17307: Material Derived from End-of-Life Tyres - Granulates and Powders - Elastomers Identification is a draft European standard developed by CEN/TC 366. The document establishes a standardized qualitative method for identifying the types of elastomers present in granulates and powder materials recovered from End-of-Life Tyres (ELT). Specifically, it outlines the use of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for the detection of pyrolysis products in solution, ensuring the analysis of ELT-derived materials is accurate and comparable across laboratories.

By providing a systematic approach for elastomer identification, prEN 17307 supports consistent recycling processes, enhances material quality assessment, and facilitates compliance with regulatory requirements in the tyre recycling and rubber industries.

Key Topics

  • Qualitative Identification of Elastomers: The standard details a procedure for identifying various elastomers such as natural rubber, SBR, BR, IIR, NBR, CR, and EPDM in recycled tyre granulates and powders.
  • Pyrolysis Technique: Samples are subjected to pyrolysis, which thermally decomposes polymers to release characteristic markers that can be analyzed.
  • GC-MS Detection: Detection and identification of pyrolysis products are performed using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, increasing the accuracy and sensitivity for trace identification.
  • Sample Preparation: Emphasizes proper homogenization, particle size reduction (below 3 mm, or below 100 µm for GC-MS module use), and extraction with acetone.
  • Interpretation of Results: Identification is based on the presence of specific marker compounds unique to each elastomer, verified through retention times and mass spectra.
  • Reporting: The method requires comprehensive documentation, including sample information, analysis conditions, chromatograms, and anomalies, ensuring traceability and reproducibility.

Applications

The method specified in prEN 17307 serves several practical applications in the recycling and rubber industries:

  • Quality Control in Tyre Recycling: Enables operators to confirm the composition of ELT-derived materials, supporting the production of high-quality granulates and powders.
  • Material Traceability: Assists manufacturers and recyclers in documenting the elastomer content of secondary raw materials, ensuring transparency in material sourcing.
  • R&D and Process Optimization: Supports researchers and quality assurance professionals in studying changes in ELT-derived material properties and optimizing recycling processes.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Facilitates conformance with environmental and product regulations by providing a standardized method for material identification.
  • Market Confidence: Ensures that products made with recycled tyre materials meet specifications, bolstering confidence among end users and stakeholders.

Related Standards

The following standards and references are closely related to the application and implementation of prEN 17307:

  • ISO 1407 - Rubber - Determination of solvent extract: Specifies a method for extraction procedures used in the sample preparation phase.
  • EN 14243-2 - Materials obtained from end-of-life tyres - Part 2: Methods for determining particle size distribution and impurities, including free steel and textile content.
  • Additional CEN/TS or ISO rubber and recycling testing standards: For laboratories and organizations looking to develop a comprehensive testing framework for ELT-derived materials.

By adopting prEN 17307, stakeholders in the tyre recycling supply chain can ensure reliable, reproducible elastomer identification, support sustainable practices, and help advance the circular economy for rubber materials.

4 Principle
A representative sample of sufficient quantity of granulate or powder sample is homogenized in order to
take a small representative aliquot for solvent extraction and then subjected to pyrolysis at elevated
temperature. Few drops of the liquid pyrolysis products are then diluted in dichloromethane for the GC-
MS analysis. The use of the mass-spectrometric detector is a mean for improving the sensitivity and
reliability of the identification of the elastomers present in low or trace amount, with threshold limit
estimated to about 5 %.
The use of this document pre-supposes sufficient working knowledge of the principles and techniques of
gas chromatography/mass-spectrometry (GC-MS) for the analyst to perform the operations d
