Overview

CEN/TS 17307:2019 defines a qualitative method for identifying elastomers in granulates and powders derived from End-of-Life Tyres (ELT). The technique uses pyrolysis of a solvent-extracted sample followed by analysis of the liquid pyrolysis products using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). This Technical Specification is intended for laboratories and organizations that need to characterise rubber feedstock from tyre recycling and secondary raw‑material streams.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and nature: Identification of elastomers in ELT granulate/powder; the method is qualitative (not for quantification) and has an estimated detection threshold around 5% for minor elastomers.
  • Sample preparation: Homogenize a representative sample (thin sheets from ~0.5 kg material), extract soluble components using acetone per ISO 1407, and dry the extracted sample.
  • Pyrolysis: Heat the sample in a dedicated pyrolysis apparatus (glass tube, lateral condenser, N2 purge) at about 525 °C ± 50 °C (a recommended 475 °C to maximise pyrolysate for certain rubbers such as NR, IR, BR, SBR, IIR, BIIR, CIIR). Maintain a slow nitrogen flow as specified to prevent oxidation and sweep pyrolysis products to the collector.
  • GC/MS analysis: Dissolve a few mg of the collected pyrolysate in dichloromethane and inject into a GC/MS. Typical analytical settings provided:
    • Capillary column: fused silica, 0.20 mm × 30 m, dimethyl polysiloxane (1 µm)
    • Injector: splitless, 300 °C
    • Temperature program: 50 °C (4 min), ramp 10 °C/min to 300 °C, hold 10 min
    • MS: Electron impact (EI) 70 eV, mass range 50–550 amu, scan acquisition
  • Interpretation: Identification relies on characteristic pyrolysis marker compounds and mass fragments. Example markers:
    • NR (natural rubber / polyisoprene): limonene (m/z 136, 93, 68)
    • SBR (styrene-butadiene): 1‑vinyl‑3‑cyclohexene (m/z 108, 93, 79); styrene (m/z 104, 78, 51)
    • BR (butadiene rubber): 1‑vinyl‑3‑cyclohexene (m/z 108, 93, 79)
    • NBR, CR, EPDM and others have listed markers and diagnostic ions in the standard.

Applications and users

  • Tyre recyclers and reclaimers: Characterise incoming ELT granulate/powder for sorting, process control and material valorisation.
  • Analytical laboratories: Provide qualitative identification of elastomer types in rubber blends and mixed feedstock.
  • Product certification & regulators: Verify claims about material composition, support compliance and traceability for secondary materials.
  • R&D and process optimisation: Use elastomer ID to guide devulcanisation, compatibilisation and product development for recycled-rubber applications.

Related standards

  • Normative reference: ISO 1407 (rubber - determination of solvent extract).
  • Prepared by CEN/TC 366 (Materials obtained from End-of-Life Tyres).
