Overview

prEN 1288-4 rev (CEN) - aligned with ISO/DIS 1288-4:2014 - specifies a standardized method for determining the bending strength of channel-shaped glass used in buildings. Often referenced as ISO 1288‑4, this part of ISO 1288 defines how to carry out bending tests on wired or unwired channel profiles to determine the profile bending strength, a value derived from the maximum bending moment and the profile’s section modulus.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Testing of channel‑shaped glass for building applications; read together with ISO 1288‑1 for fundamentals and limitations.
  • Definitions: Profile bending strength = maximum bending moment ÷ section modulus. Section modulus selection depends on whether the flange or web is in tension.
  • Specimens:
    • Nominal specimen length: 2100 mm ± 5 mm.
    • Dimensions (web width, flange height, web/flange thickness, angle) must meet product tolerances (see EN 572‑7 references).
    • Storage in test environment for at least 4 hours before testing.
  • Apparatus and fixtures:
    • Load/strain‑controlled testing machine with smooth, stepless loading and ≤ ±2.0% load measurement error.
    • Supporting and bending rollers: 50 mm diameter, ≥550 mm length; all rollers free to rotate.
    • Air bags and spreader plates to apply distributed bending load; example air bag size: 310 × 1020 × 200 mm with pressurisation guidance (70 kPa for widths ≤300 mm, 50 kPa for >300 mm).
    • Rubber pads 6 mm thick, hardness (40 ± 10) IRHD (ISO 48).
  • Test conditions and procedure:
    • Ambient: (23 ± 5) °C and relative humidity 40–70%; temperature stable to 1 °C during test.
    • Bending rate: (2 ± 0.4) MPa/s (uniformly increasing stress until failure).
    • Record maximum force, time to failure, measured dimensions and which part (flange or web) was in tension.
  • Evaluation and reporting:
    • Calculate profile bending strength using measured maximum force plus specimen self‑weight and appropriate section modulus (values for common profiles are provided in Annex A).
    • Test report must include profile description, individual specimen measurements, section modulus used, profile strengths (no averaging), and deviations from the standard.

Applications and users

This standard is essential for:

  • Glass manufacturers and quality control laboratories validating channel glass strength.
  • Structural and façade engineers assessing channel profiles in load‑bearing or decorative glazing systems.
  • Product certification bodies and compliance officers documenting mechanical performance.
  • Architects and specifiers selecting channel‑shaped glass for building envelopes, skylights or canopies.

Practical uses include product development, acceptance testing, verification for specifications and safety assessment in building design.

Related standards

  • ISO 1288‑1 (Fundamentals of testing glass) - normative companion.
  • EN 1288‑4 - European basis for this part.
  • ISO 16293‑1 (glass product definitions) and ISO 48 (rubber hardness) - normative references used by the procedure.

FDIS 1288-4
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this part of ISO 1288 may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard ISO 1288-4 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 160, Glass in building,
Subcommittee SC 2, Use considerations in conjunction with Technical Committee CEN/TC 129, Glass in building.
ISO 1288 consists of the following parts, under the general title Glass in building — Determination of the bending
