The designation system is applicable to all polyetheretherketones.
It applies to materials ready for normal use in the form of powder, granules or pellets, unmodified or modified by colourants, fillers, reinforcements or other additives.
It is not intended to imply that materials having the same designation necessarily give the same performance. This document does not provide engineering data, performance data or data on processing conditions which can be required to specify a material for a particular application and/or method of processing.
If such additional properties are required, they are intended to be determined in accordance with the test methods specified in ISO 23153-2, if suitable.
In order to specify a thermoplastic material for a particular application or to ensure reproducible processing, additional requirements are given in data block 5 (see 4.1).

a) Schmelzviskosität oder Schmelze-Volumenfließrate,
b) Zugmodul,
c) Zugfestigkeit
a) viscosité à l'état fondu ou indice de fluidité à chaud en volume;
b) module en traction;
c) résistance à la traction;

Overview
EN ISO 23153-1:2020 / ISO 23153-1:2020 establishes a standardized designation system and the basis for specifications for polyetheretherketone (PEEK) moulding and extrusion materials. The standard covers all PEEK grades - polymer chains composed of phenylene rings linked in the (1,4) position by two ether groups followed by a ketone group - and applies to materials supplied as powder, granules or pellets, either unmodified or modified with colourants, fillers, reinforcements or other additives. It defines how to describe and classify PEEK materials for specification purposes but does not provide engineering performance data or processing conditions.
Key topics and requirements
- Designation structure: A standardized identity and individual-item block split into five data blocks (Identification; Fillers/reinforcements; Intended application/processing and supplementary info; Designatory properties; Optional additional requirements).
- Designatory properties: Classification is based on key measurable properties:
- Melt viscosity or melt volume‑flow rate (MVR / MFR)
- Tensile modulus
- Tensile strength
- Fillers & reinforcements: Uses ISO 1043‑2 code-letters to indicate filler type, form and nominal mass content (e.g., glass fiber, carbon, minerals).
- Application/processing info: Data block to capture intended use or processing method and other important properties, additives or colorants.
- Limitations: Identical designations do not guarantee identical performance; detailed or additional properties should be specified and tested per ISO 23153‑2 and relevant test methods.
- Referenced test methods: Standards cited for measurement and terminology include ISO 1133‑1 (MFR/MVR), ISO 527 series (tensile properties), ISO 11443 (rheometry), ISO 1043‑1/2 (abbreviations/symbols).
Applications
- Creating unambiguous material specifications for procurement, quality control and regulatory documentation for PEEK moulding and extrusion materials.
- Standardizing trade and technical data sheets used by resin producers, compounders, part manufacturers and OEMs in industries requiring high-performance thermoplastics.
- Supporting material selection for medical devices, aerospace, automotive, oil & gas, electronics and industrial components where PEEK’s high temperature, chemical and mechanical performance are required.
Who should use this standard
