Inlet valves for flushing cisterns with internal overflow
The purpose of this document is to specify:
- the dimensional, hygiene, tightness, pressure performance, hydraulic, acoustic, mechanical and physico chemical characteristics which inlet valves for flushing cisterns shall comply with;
- the test methods for testing these characteristics;
- marking and presentation.
This document applies exclusively to the valve itself and it does not prejudge compliance with health regulations as the inlet valve is being fitted into the cistern.
This document does not cover valves intended to equip flushing cisterns with external overflow.
This document applies to valves such as float valves limit operating at pressures up to NP 10 (whose operating range is from 0,05 MPa to 1 MPa - 0,5 bar to 10 bar) designed to supply cold water to flushing cisterns for use with WC pans, that are permanently connected to a potable water supply system.
The working range can be extended downwards (< 0,05 MPa - 0,5 bar) down to 0,01 MPa (0,1 bar), in which case the manufacturer's instructions shall indicate this possibility as well as the recommended working range.
Füllventile für Spülkästen mit integriertem Überlauf
Diese Europäische Norm dient der Festlegung von:
¾ Anforderungen an Maße, Hygiene, Dichtheit, Druckbeständigkeit, hydraulischer Eigenschaften, Geräuschverhalten, mechanischer Festigkeit und physikalisch-chemischer Eigenschaften, denen die Füllventile für Spülkästen entsprechen müssen;
¾ Prüfverfahren zum Nachweis dieser Anforderungen;
- les caractéristiques dimensionnelles, d'hygiène, d'étanchéité, de tenue en pression, hydrauliques, acoustiques, mécaniques, physico-chimiques auxquelles doivent répondre les robinets pour réservoir de chasse ;
- la technique des essais ;

Overview
EN 14124:2004 (CEN) specifies requirements and test methods for inlet valves for flushing cisterns with internal overflow. The standard covers the valve itself (not the cistern installation) and applies to devices-typically float-operated inlet valves-designed to supply cold potable water to WC flushing cisterns permanently connected to a potable water system. It excludes valves for cisterns with external overflow and other tank applications.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and limits: Designed for valves operating up to PN 10 (dynamic/static pressure range normally 0.05 MPa to 1 MPa - 0.5–10 bar). Manufacturers may declare a reduced lower working limit down to 0.01 MPa (0.1 bar).
- Materials: Components in contact with potable water must be safe for human consumption (no adverse taste, smell or contamination up to 25 °C). End connections are required to be copper alloy or an equivalent-performance material.
- Design and manufacture: Composition (supply connection, outlets, float/detector), possible water-level adjustment devices, permitted connection orientations (side, back, bottom, top), and restrictions on dismantlable submerged connections.
- Dimensional requirements: Threaded end-connection dimensions are specified (e.g., common sizes and tolerances referenced to EN ISO 228-1).
- Mechanical and hydraulic performance: Tests and limits for tensile strength and torque resistance of end connections, flow rate and filling time, resistance to pressure, reopening behavior, endurance, and susceptibility to water hammer.
- Leaktightness & backflow prevention: Static and dynamic leak tests and mandatory backflow prevention/air inlet characteristics to prevent potable-water contamination (in line with EN 1717 requirements).
- Acoustic characteristics: Noise emission requirements and measurement methods (informative Annex A references EN ISO 3822 series).
- Testing, marking & presentation: Detailed test methods for all characteristics (tensile, torque, backflow, leak, flow, endurance, acoustic) and labelling/marking requirements.
Practical applications and users
- Manufacturers of inlet valves and flushing cistern components use EN 14124:2004 to design, test and certify products for the European market.
- Product test laboratories follow the standard’s test methods for performance verification (leaktightness, flow, endurance, acoustics).
- Plumbing product specifiers, installers and procurement teams reference the standard to ensure valves meet safety, hygiene and performance expectations for WC cisterns connected to potable water.
- Regulatory and compliance personnel use it when assessing conformity to European/national standards for sanitary installations.
