Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Foil - Part 1: Technical conditions for inspection and delivery

This document specifies the technical conditions for inspection and delivery of wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy foil. The gauge range covered is 6 m to 200 m.
It does not apply to lacquered, painted, embossed or laminated products.

Overview

EN 546-1:2006 - published by CEN - defines the technical conditions for inspection and delivery of wrought aluminium and aluminium-alloy foil. The standard covers foil in the gauge range 6 µm to 200 µm and explicitly excludes lacquered, painted, embossed or laminated products. It sets out ordering information, production and quality-control expectations, sampling and test procedures, conformity requirements, marking and packaging rules for aluminium foil supplied as coils or reels.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and product types: Applies to converter foil, consumer/household foil (typically 10–24 µm) and container foil (35–200 µm) within the stated gauge range.
  • Ordering information: Purchaser must specify alloy designation, single- or double-rolled form, temper (per EN 515), thickness, width/tolerances, coil dimensions, core type, quantity, lubrication and any special requirements.
  • Quality control: Manufacturer must maintain an inspection plan (recommended at least equivalent to EN ISO 9001) detailing tests, frequency and records. Inspections are normally performed on inspection lots defined in EN 12258-1.
  • Chemical and mechanical requirements: Chemical composition must conform to EN 573-3; mechanical properties are covered in EN 546-2.
  • Sampling and testing:
    • Chemical sampling at casting per EN 14361; referee analysis per EN 14242 if disputed.
    • Mechanical specimens oriented longitudinally; tensile testing per EN 546-2.
    • Sampling frequency: typically one specimen per inspection lot; if agreed, one specimen per 10 000 kg (or part thereof); single coils >10 000 kg yield one specimen per coil.
    • Retest rules: if an initial mechanical test fails and no procedural error is found, two further specimens are tested - both must pass for the lot to be accepted.
  • Dimension and surface checks: Tolerances per EN 546-3; visual surface examination without magnification unless otherwise agreed.
  • Conformity, marking and packaging: Supplier shall provide conformity statements on request; marking and packaging only as agreed in the order and must not affect end use.

Applications

EN 546-1:2006 is practical for:

  • Specifying aluminium foil in procurement contracts and purchase orders.
  • Establishing inspection and acceptance criteria for foil producers and converters.
  • Quality assurance for food packaging, container manufacture and household foil production.
  • Defining sampling and testing regimes for third‑party labs and internal QA teams.
