This draft European Standard specifies the characteristics, performance and test methods for extinguishing aerosol dispensers, in accordance with Directive 75/324/EEC, for fire extinguishing purposes. Requirements in this draft Standard are specified for products containing less than 1 kg or 1 l of extinguishing media, which can be expelled by the action of internal pressure and are intended to extinguish test fires of type A + B, or type A + F, or type A + B + F classes of EN 2. These extinguishing aerosol dispensers are intended to be used by untrained persons for domestic applications. They are not intended to be used on gas fires (class C) and metal fires (class D).
Requirements are specified for minimum performance in Annex I for extinguishing test fires of type A, type B and type F classes of EN 2, as appropriate.
Annex A gives the conditioning treatment to be applied to extinguishing aerosol dispensers prior to testing as described in Annex B to Annex K.

NOTE 1   A test report and a satisfactory audit supporting documentation could form the basis for an applicant to request a certification of his product from an EA accredited certification body. Additional requirements can be made by national regulations and/or quality marks.
NOTE 2   Where appropriate, component family testing could be applied.

This standard specifies the characteristics, performance requirements and test methods for portable fire extinguishers.
Reference to the suitability of an extinguisher for use on gaseous fires (class C fires) are at the manufacturer’s discretion, but are applied only to powder type extinguishers which have gained a class B or class A and class B rating.
Suitability of extinguishers for use on class D fires (fires involving flammable metals) is outside the scope of this standard in respect of test fires. However, extinguishers claiming class D suitability are covered in all other respects by the requirements in this standard for powder extinguishers.
It is considered hazardous for powder and carbon dioxide fire extinguishers to be used on Class F fires.  For this reason powder and carbon dioxide fire extinguishers are excluded for conformance with regard to Class F in this European Standard.
NOTE   The extinction of a metal fire presents a situation so specific (in terms of the metal itself, its form, the configuration of the fire etc.) that it is not possible to define a representative standard fire for the purposes of testing. The efficiency of extinguishers on class D fires needs to be established on a case by case basis.

This European Standard specifies the rules of design, type testing and inspection during manufacturing, ratings and classification of mobile fire extinguishers and test methods to be used. It applies to mobile fire extinguishers with a total mass above 20 kg for powder, water based and CO2 extinguishers. This standard applies to mobile fire extinguishers that are manoeuvred by an operator on foot only.
It does not cover fire tests for class C and class F fires, but the used extinguishing media can be effective on these types of fire. Class D fires are considered to be a very specialist application and are not included in this standard, but may be made the object of national specification.
