Overview

EN 4725:2014 (CEN) is a European Aerospace series standard that specifies requirements for aluminium alloy AL‑P2024 (Al Cu4Mg1) in the T351 temper, produced as rolled plate with thicknesses 6 mm < a ≤ 150 mm for aerospace applications. The standard defines chemical composition limits, delivery and heat‑treatment conditions, mechanical performance criteria, inspection methods and product verification essential for use in aircraft structures.

Key topics and requirements

  • Material designation: AL‑P2024 - Al Cu4Mg1 in T351 condition (solution treated, water‑quenched, controlled stretch and natural aging).
  • Heat treatment / delivery condition: solution treatment at about 490 °C – 500 °C, water‑quench to ≤ 40 °C, controlled stretch 1.5 % – 3 %, and natural aging t ≥ 5 days.
  • Chemical composition: limits specified for Si, Fe, Cu, Mn, Mg, Cr, Zn, Ti and remainder Al (e.g., Cu ≈ 3.8–4.9 %, Mg ≈ 1.2–1.8 %, Si/Fe ≤ 0.50 % - see standard for exact values).
  • Mechanical properties: thickness‑ and direction‑dependent minimum values for proof stress (Rp0.2), tensile strength (Rm) and elongation (A). Typical ranges in the standard include:
    • Rp0.2: approx. ≥ 260 – 325 MPa
    • Rm: approx. ≥ 350 – 450 MPa
    • A (elongation): varies from ≈ 3 % to 12 % depending on thickness and specimen direction
  • Inspection and acceptance: references to ultrasonic inspection (EN 4050‑4) with acceptance classes defined by thickness (Class 3 for 12–80 mm, Class 2 for >80 mm); electrical conductivity limits (γ ≤ 19.5 MS/m acceptable); dimensional, marking and batch verification per EN 4400‑1.
  • Additional properties: hardness (HBW ≈ 120 indicated for information), fracture toughness, fatigue, stress‑corrosion requirements and product qualification references are included or linked to the Aerospace series rules.

Applications

  • Use where a high‑strength, heat‑treatable aerospace aluminium plate is required: structural aircraft skins, wing and fuselage panels, stiffeners and other primary/secondary aerospace components that demand controlled mechanical and metallurgical properties.
  • Applicable to designers, material specification authors, manufacturers and suppliers specifying AL‑P2024 T351 plate for certified aerospace hardware.

Who should use this standard

  • Aerospace materials engineers and designers
  • Procurement and quality managers in aerospace manufacturing and supply chains
  • Metallurgists and heat‑treatment shops producing or verifying AL‑P2024 plates
  • Certification and inspection bodies performing acceptance testing and qualification
