Overview
EN 15767-3:2026 is the European Standard developed by CEN for portable equipment used in firefighting operations, specifically focusing on portable monitors and foam devices. Building upon the general requirements of EN 15767-1, this standard specifies safety, performance, classification, test methods, instructions for use and maintenance, and marking for devices that aspirate air to project low expansion foam and can also induct foam concentrate.
This standard ensures a harmonized approach to the design, verification, and documentation of portable foam equipment, supporting modern firefighting strategies and operational safety. It applies only to devices manufactured after the standard's publication date, setting clear benchmarks for new products entering the market.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
- Applies to portable monitors equipped with foam devices for firefighting support operations.
- Covers equipment designed for low expansion foam projection, and foam concentrate induction.
Device Types and Definitions
- Clear definitions for foam nozzles, foam tubes, self-inducting nozzles, foam attachments, pick-up tubes, and spreaders.
- Details on foam concentrate, foam solution, and induction rates are included for precise classification.
Safety and Performance Requirements
- Maximum mass limits by flowrate categories.
- Ergonomic design requirements for safe operation with firefighting gloves (EN 659 compliant).
- Mechanical characteristics: maximum allowable torques, identifiable flow and jet adjustment positions.
- Material suitability and resistance to heat and frost conditions.
Hydraulic Characteristics
- Testing at specified reference and nominal pressures.
- Requirements for effective throw distance, flowrates accuracy, and minimum spray angle for self-inducting nozzles.
Documentation and Marking
- Instruction and maintenance manuals required for each device, available in both paper and digital formats.
- Mandatory marking for manufacturer identification, product designation, serial numbers, flow ratings, and adjustment mechanisms.
Applications
EN 15767-3:2026 supports a wide range of applications in fire safety:
Fire Brigades and Emergency Services
- Enables effective deployment of portable foam devices during fire suppression on industrial sites, storage facilities, and complex environments where foam extinguishing agents offer advantages over water.
- Assists in rapid, safe setup and operation, improving response times and operational reliability.
Equipment Manufacturers
- Provides manufacturers with clear criteria for the design, testing, and documentation of portable foam devices, facilitating market access and regulatory compliance across Europe.
- Reduces ambiguity in product performance and marking, enhancing product safety and usability.
Certification and Testing Bodies
- Supports type testing and verification against harmonized criteria to ensure new devices meet stringent safety and performance benchmarks.
- Offers guidance for acceptance testing upon delivery.
Related Standards
For comprehensive compliance and interoperability, organizations should consider the following related standards:
- EN 15767-1: General requirements for portable monitor assemblies.
- EN 15767-2: Specifications for water nozzles used with portable monitors.
