Overview
EN 4673-003:2010 - Aerospace series: Inserts, UNJ threads, self‑locking, with self‑broaching keys - Part 003: Technical specification - is a European Standard from CEN that defines the characteristics, qualification and acceptance requirements for self‑locking threaded inserts with UNJ internal threads and self‑broaching keys used in aerospace applications. The standard is applicable whenever referenced and complements related installation and design parts (EN 4673‑001 and EN 4673‑002).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Requirements apply to self‑locking inserts with UNJ threads and self‑broaching keys for aerospace use.
- Material and manufacturing: Materials must conform to the definition document; heat treatment, machining/forming methods and surface treatments (including coatings and surface roughness) are specified and inspected.
- Dimensional control and gauging: Thread and key position acceptance use standard gauging; a “GO” inspection gauge for key position is normative (Annex E).
- Quality assurance:
- Qualification: Typical qualification sampling requires 39 inserts selected from a single batch by simple random sampling (EN 9133 referenced for qualification procedure).
- Acceptance: Batch acceptance uses statistical sampling (ISO 2859‑1) and inspection plans with defined AQL / limiting quality concepts.
- Mechanical tests:
- Installation checks: Inserts must be installable by hand and show no key buckling or thread deformation after installation (Annex A defines test blocks).
- Rotational resistance: Inserts are tested in defined test blocks and assemblies to verify torque resistance (Annex B).
- Axial tensile strength: Axial load capability is verified according to strength class and Annex C procedures.
- Reusability: Cyclic assembly tests (Annex D) check seating/unseating and self‑locking torque retention across multiple cycles.
- Breakaway, seating and self‑locking torque: Definitions and measurement requirements for torques are included.
- Inspection and reporting: Manufacturers carry out acceptance inspections and provide test reports when required.
Applications and users
EN 4673‑003:2010 is used by:
- Aerospace component manufacturers producing or specifying self‑locking UNJ threaded inserts with self‑broaching keys.
- Design engineers specifying standard inserts in structural and mechanical assemblies.
- Quality assurance and procurement teams verifying batch acceptance, qualification and supplier compliance.
- Maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) organizations that install or replace inserts in airframes, engine mounts and critical assemblies. Typical applications include threaded repair inserts, nut replacements in aluminum, titanium or stainless steel test blocks, and high‑reliability fastener zones where UNJ threads and positive key locking are required.
