Overview
EN 1605:2013 - issued by CEN - is the European test method for thermal insulating products that determines deformation under specified compressive load, temperature, and time conditions. The standard defines the equipment, specimen preparation, conditioning and a two‑step test procedure to quantify relative deformation (percentage reduction in thickness) for insulation products used in building applications.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Applies to thermal insulating materials and products for building applications; measures deformation under defined compressive stress, temperature and duration.
- Test principle: Apply a specified compressive load and measure relative deformation in two steps: Step A at ~23 °C and Step B at elevated temperature/time per selected test set.
- Specified sets of conditions (examples from Table 1):
- Set 1: 20 kPa - Step A (23 ±5 °C, 48 h), Step B (80 ±1 °C, 48 h)
- Set 2: 40 kPa - Step A (23 ±5 °C, 48 h), Step B (70 ±1 °C, 168 h)
- Set 3: 80 kPa - Step A (23 ±5 °C, 48 h), Step B (60 ±1 °C, 168 h)
- Apparatus: Linear measuring instruments (EN 12085 accuracy), oven with forced air circulation (±1 K), and a self‑aligning loading device with flat polished plates; deformation measured with a dial gauge.
- Specimens: Original product thickness (≥20 mm) and square cut (50×50 mm up to 300×300 mm recommended); retain integral facings/skins; tolerance on parallelism ≤0.5 % of side length (max 0.5 mm).
- Conditioning: Minimum 6 h at (23 ±5) °C (dispute condition: 23 ±2 °C, 50 ±5 % RH).
- Number of specimens: As per product standard or minimum three if not specified.
- Calculation: Relative deformation ε1 = 100·(ds − d1)/ds and ε2 = 100·(ds − d2)/ds, where ds = initial thickness, d1 and d2 = thickness after steps A and B.
- Accuracy: Interlaboratory data and ISO 5725‑2 analysis provide repeatability/reproducibility estimates for the method.

The standard EN 1605:2013 specifies critical methodologies for assessing the deformation of thermal insulating products when subjected to defined compressive loads, temperature variations, and time factors. The relevance of this standard is particularly noteworthy, as it directly addresses the performance characteristics essential for ensuring that insulation materials maintain their effectiveness over time in building applications. One of the strengths of SIST EN 1605:2013 lies in its comprehensive scope, which outlines the necessary equipment and procedures required for accurate testing. By establishing uniform testing conditions, this standard allows for the reliable measurement of deformation, which is crucial for manufacturers and builders when selecting thermal insulating products. This ensures that consumers receive products that perform reliably, helping to maintain the energy efficiency of buildings. Moreover, the standard emphasizes the importance of temperature conditions, reflecting real-world scenarios where thermal insulating products are subject to varying climatic conditions. The focus on compressive load further enhances its relevance, as it correlates directly to the real-life application where insulation materials are often compressed in walls, roofs, and floors. Lastly, the systematic approach outlined in EN 1605:2013 not only promotes consistency in testing but also supports innovation in the thermal insulating products market by providing a benchmark that manufacturers can aim for. This makes the standard an invaluable resource in the construction industry, guiding stakeholders towards informed decisions that enhance building performance and energy conservation efforts.
