This document (EN ISO 6320:2017) has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 34 “Food
products” in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 307 “Oilseeds, vegetable and animal fats
and oils and their by-products - Methods of sampling and analysis” the secretariat of which is held by
AFNOR.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by September 2017, and conflicting national standards
shall be withdrawn at the latest by September 2017.

ratio of the velocity of light of a definite wavelength in a vacuum to its velocity in the medium
Note 1 to entry: In practice, the velocity of light in air is used in place of that in a vacuum and, unless otherwise
specified, the selected wavelength is the mean wavelength of the sodium D lines (589,6 nm).
Note 2 to entry: The refractive index of a given substance varies with the wavelength of the incident light and

with temperature. The notation used is n , where t is the temperature in degrees Celsius.

By means of a suitable refractometer, the refractive index of a liquid sample is measured at a specified
temperature.
