Overview
EN 15431:2008 is a CEN European standard that specifies power systems and related controls for front-mounted implements on winter and road service area maintenance vehicles. Its primary purpose is to ensure interchangeability between vehicles and implements (e.g., snow ploughs, spreaders, mowers) fitted to front-mounting plates according to EN 15432. The standard defines minimum performance, hydraulic and mechanical component requirements, electrical interfaces and connection layouts. It excludes airport equipment and applications requiring continuous hydraulic flow above 45 l/min.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Hydraulic system architecture
- Open-type circuits using one variable-displacement pump or one/two constant pumps.
- Each circuit requires an excess-pressure protection device, a switching device for unpressurized circulation, an oil reservoir and filtration.
- Flow rates and pressure
- Circuit 1 (e.g. snow plough): min. 20 l/min ±5 l/min at 75% rated engine speed.
- Circuit 2 (e.g. spreader): min. 40 l/min ±5 l/min at 75% rated engine speed.
- Pressure circuit 1: min. 175 bar. Circuit 2: min. 200 bar (GVW ≤ 18 t) or 250 bar (GVW > 18 t).
- Power and tank requirements
- Minimum continuous power: 16 kW (GVW ≤ 18 t) or 20 kW (GVW > 18 t).
- Oil tank must tolerate removal of up to 10 l without impairment.
- Cooling capacity & test
- Minimum cooling capacity: 5% of min. continuous power for winter vehicles; 25% for road service vehicles (summer use).
- Temperature rise limit: hydraulic oil must not exceed ∆T = 50 K above ambient during a standardized test (restrictor method; ∆p = P/Q).
- Hydraulic lines and couplings
- Minimum inner diameters: Circuit 1 10 mm, Circuit 2 12 mm, Separate return 18 mm, Unpressurised return 10 mm.
- Quick couplings per ISO 16028 (specified sizes and color-coded functions).
- Mechanical PTO and shaft
- Two PTO profiles defined (Profile A and B) with speed/power limits (e.g., Profile A: n = 540 min⁻¹, Pmax = 60 kW); shaft dimensions reference ISO 500-3 and SAE J499a.
- Electrical interfaces
- Front connectors: 24 V 7-pin (ISO 1185) and 12 V 7-pin (ISO 1724).
- Cabin connectors: 3-pin 24 V/12 V sockets with speed pulse per ISO 16844-2.
Applications and Users
- Manufacturers of winter service and road maintenance vehicles and implements (snow ploughs, spreaders, mowers).
- Fleet owners and municipal procurement teams specifying interoperable front-mounted equipment.
- Design and test engineers implementing hydraulic, mechanical PTO and electrical interfaces.
- Service and maintenance personnel ensuring safe installation and replacement of implements.
