Overview
EN ISO 3823-2:2003/A1:2008 is Amendment 1 to ISO 3823-2:2003 - the international/European standard for dentistry rotary bur instruments, Part 2: finishing burs. Published by CEN in July 2008, this amendment updates dimensional values, adds colour‑coding provisions for carbide finishing burs, introduces a conical pointed type and makes minor editorial corrections (for example changing “Quality 3” to “Grade 3”). The amendment was adopted for national implementation by CEN members with a target withdrawal/endorsement date of January 2009.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Dimensional corrections and table updates
- Several tables (Tables 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 16, 20, 34a and others) were revised to correct dimensions and add a new colour column where applicable.
- Example correction: dimension d in Table 7 changed from 0,05 mm to 0,5 mm.
- Colour coding for carbide instruments
- The amendment introduces an optional, manufacturer‑applied colour code for carbide finishing burs to complement the designation.
- Defined colours and meanings: fine = red, extra fine = yellow, ultra fine = white.
- Use of colour coding is optional, but if used, colours must conform to the amendment’s specified tables.
- New bur geometry
- Adds subclause 5.3.6.17 for conical, pointed carbide finishing burs with apex angle α = 6° to 12° and a required smooth, rounded, non‑cutting tip.
- Editorial and consistency changes
- Terminology change in clause 6.4.2 from “Quality 3” to “Grade 3”.
- Scope of amendment
- Applies to finishing burs designations, shank and head dimensions, number of blades, and marking/identification (colour) conventions included in the amended tables.
Practical applications and users
- Dental instrument manufacturers - to ensure production tolerances, dimensional interchangeability and consistent marking of finishing burs (especially carbide types).
- Dental clinics and laboratories - to correctly identify bur fineness and geometry for clinical finishing, polishing and laboratory tasks.
- Regulatory bodies and procurement - to specify compliant products and verify labelling/colour coding where manufacturers choose to use it.
- Design engineers and quality managers - to update drawings, inspection criteria and quality control procedures per the amended tables.

- Parent document: ISO 3823-2:2003 (Part 2: Finishing burs) - this amendment modifies that text.
