Overview

ISO 3823-2:2003/Amd 1:2008 is an international standard amendment focused on dentistry rotary bur instruments, specifically finishing burs. This amendment refines specifications related to the dimensions, blade counts, and introduces a standardized colour coding system for carbide finishing burs used in dental procedures. Developed by ISO/TC 106, Subcommittee SC 4 (Dental instruments), it ensures enhanced consistency, safety, and identification of rotary burs for dental professionals worldwide. The amendment was published by ISO in 2008 as an update to the original 2003 standard.

Key Topics

  • Dimension Corrections: The amendment corrects critical measurement values, such as adjusting the dimension ‘d’ from 0.05 mm to 0.5 mm to align with actual manufacturing standards.
  • Colour Coding System: A new colour coding framework for carbide finishing burs facilitates easy identification:
    • Red: Fine burs (standard finishing)
    • Yellow: Extra fine burs
    • White: Ultra fine burs
  • Detailed Tables: Updated tables (e.g., Table 8, Table 11, Table 12) include:
    • Nominal size designations
    • Diameter and length tolerances
    • Number of blades for different bur types
    • Corresponding colour codes for burs for consistent manufacturing specification
  • Shape Specifications: Addition of specifications for conical, pointed carbide finishing burs with smooth, rounded, non-cutting tips, designed to improve finishing quality.
  • Terminology Update: The replacement of “Quality 3” with “Grade 3” in section 6.4.2 for clarity and standardization.

Applications

This ISO amendment is crucial for manufacturers, dental professionals, and regulatory bodies involved in:

  • Dental bur Production: Ensures manufacturers produce finishing burs with precise, standardized dimensions and identifiable features for reliability and safety.
  • Clinical Dentistry: Assists clinicians in selecting appropriate rotary burs for finishing dental restorations with improved accuracy based on size and surface finish.
  • Quality Control: Enables regulatory authorities and dental instrument quality inspectors to verify compliance with recognized standards.
  • Instrument Identification: The colour coding simplifies bur identification, reducing errors during dental procedures and improving workflow efficiency.
  • Product Development: Facilitates innovation by providing a clear framework for bur dimensions and designs, aiding R&D departments in developing new dental rotary instruments.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

Avant-propos
votants.
