Standard Test Method for Oil Migration or Plasticizer Bleed-Out of Preformed Tape Sealants

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 Preformed tape sealants are tacky, deformable solids that are used under compression between two substrates in a variety of sealing applications. In general, oil migration or plasticizer bleed-out is not desirable. However, in some limited instances, a controlled amount of plasticizer migration is sometimes desired in order to improve the penetration of the tape into the interstices of porous substrates. This test method is designed to indicate whether or not a preformed tape sealant exhibits oil or plasticizer migration and, if so, to what extent.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers a laboratory procedure that can be used to determine the oil migration or plasticizer bleed-out of preformed tape sealants.
1.2 The values stated in acceptable metric units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.
1.3 The subcommittee with jurisdiction is not aware of any similar ISO standard.
1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM C772-03(2019) - Standard Test Method for Oil Migration or Plasticizer Bleed-Out of Preformed Tape Sealants outlines a laboratory procedure for evaluating the tendency of preformed tape sealants to exhibit oil migration or plasticizer bleed-out. These sealants, typically used under compression between substrates for various sealing applications, need to maintain performance by controlling or limiting the migration of oils or plasticizers. The method helps manufacturers, laboratories, and quality assurance professionals determine whether a tape sealant meets the expected standards for such migration, ensuring end-use product reliability and minimizing undesired effects like staining or loss of adhesion.

Key Topics

  • Purpose: Establishes a uniform laboratory test for detecting and measuring oil migration and plasticizer bleed-out in preformed tape sealants.
  • Sample Preparation: Involves cutting sections of preformed tape sealant and assembly with filter paper to form test specimens.
  • Testing Process:
    • Test specimens are compressed with weights and heat-aged in a vented air-circulating oven at specific temperatures and durations.
    • After conditioning, the filter papers beneath the sealant pads are examined for visible staining or migration.
  • Assessment: Results include measurement of stain distance, number of stained filter papers, and general observation of oil or plasticizer movement.
  • Reporting: Documentation of the sealant's identification, oven conditions, extent of migration, and relevant observations is required.
  • Significance: In most cases, oil migration or bleed-out is undesirable due to potential substrate staining and compromised sealant integrity. However, controlled migration can occasionally enhance sealant penetration into porous surfaces.

Applications

ASTM C772-03(2019) test method adds value across several sectors, including construction, manufacturing, and laboratory testing, by:

  • Quality Control for Building Sealants: Ensuring preformed tape sealants used in windows, panels, roofs, and facades do not excessively bleed oils or plasticizers, which could otherwise weaken joint seals or create aesthetic issues.
  • Product Development and Comparison: Assisting manufacturers in benchmarking new preformed tape sealant formulations against industry requirements for oil migration or plasticizer stability.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Specification Adherence: Demonstrating conformity with buyer or code authority specifications for low migration properties.
  • Sealant Selection for Porous Substrates: Permitting a controlled amount of bleed-out when deeper sealant penetration into porous substrates is needed to enhance adhesion.
  • Third-Party Laboratory Testing: Serving as a recognized methodology anywhere independent validation of preformed tape sealant performance is required.

Related Standards

Professionals using ASTM C772-03(2019) may also reference the following ASTM standards for complementary test methods and terminology:

  • ASTM C717 - Terminology of Building Seals and Sealants
  • ASTM D2203 - Test Method for Staining from Sealants
  • ASTM E145 - Specification for Gravity-Convection and Forced-Ventilation Ovens

While there is currently no equivalent ISO standard for this test, ASTM C772-03(2019) aligns with internationally recognized principles, ensuring its relevance for global markets concerned with tape sealant quality and performance.
