The chemical composition and mechanical properties of the material as enumerated in this specification shall, in case of disagreement, be determined in accordance with the referenced ASTM documents for chemical analysis and tension test.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers UNS N08020, UNS N08026, and UNS N08024 round weaving wire.
Note 1: Weaving wire is customarily not welded. For applications involving welding in which the wire should be stabilized against loss of corrosion resistance, the purchaser should refer to Specification B473.
1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to become familiar with all hazards including those identified in the appropriate Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for this product/material as provided by the manufacturer, to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices, and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM B475-07(2018) is the internationally recognized standard specification for UNS N08020, UNS N08024, and UNS N08026 nickel alloy round weaving wire. Developed by ASTM International, this standard outlines the requirements for the chemical composition, mechanical properties, and manufacturing processes for round weaving wires made from these nickel alloys. It ensures the quality, uniformity, and traceability necessary for industrial applications where high corrosion resistance and specific mechanical characteristics are vital.

The standard applies to non-welded weaving wire, which is commonly used for weaving and fabricating mesh and screening products in demanding environments. It also addresses the mechanical testing methods and criteria for acceptance to help ensure product reliability.

Key Topics

  • Materials Covered: The specification includes UNS N08020, UNS N08024, and UNS N08026 nickel alloys, all of which are known for excellent corrosion resistance and high-temperature strength.
  • Heat Treatment: Requires solution-annealing as the final heat treatment, yielding a specified structure and mechanical properties.
  • Mechanical Properties: The standard specifies tensile strength requirements for both annealed and cold-drawn conditions, with values dependent on wire diameter.
  • Chemical Composition: Strict requirements for alloying elements such as nickel, chromium, molybdenum, copper, columbium+tantalum, nitrogen, and iron, plus limits on carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon.
  • Dimensional Tolerances: Detailed permissible variations in wire diameter to maintain product uniformity.
  • Surface Finishes: Allows for pickled, bright-annealed, or cold-drawn finishes to ensure appropriate surface quality.
  • Ordering Information: Outlines essential purchase details, including quantity, alloy type, dimensions, condition, finish, inspection requirements, certification, and intended end use.
  • Testing and Certification: Specifies test methods for chemical and tensile properties (per ASTM E1473 and E8/E8M), acceptance criteria, and options for certification and test result reporting.
  • Labeling and Packaging: Requires clear product marking and secure packaging to facilitate traceability and safe transport.

Applications

ASTM B475-07(2018) nickel alloy round weaving wire is used in a variety of demanding applications, thanks to its superior corrosion resistance, strength, and durability:

  • Industrial Filtration: Mesh and screen weaving for filtering devices in the chemical, petrochemical, and food industries.
  • Process Equipment: Construction of non-welded mesh for separators, sieves, and barriers exposed to aggressive media.
  • High-Temperature Environments: Components within furnaces, heat exchangers, and reactors where resistance to scaling and oxidation is necessary.
  • Electronics and Energy: Weaving wire for battery manufacturing, fuel cells, and other specialty energy applications.
  • Marine and Offshore: Fabrication of mesh or screens in seawater-exposed environments, making use of nickel alloys’ resistance to chloride-induced corrosion.

Related Standards

The following ASTM standards and specifications are referenced or related to ASTM B475-07(2018):

  • ASTM B473: Specification for UNS N08020, N08024, and N08026 nickel alloy bar and wire (especially relevant for welded applications).
