Overview
ASTM F2653-16(2020) is the internationally recognized standard specification for paintball valve male threaded connections designed for use with approved compressed gas cylinders. Developed by ASTM and maintained by Committee F08 on Sports Equipment, Playing Surfaces, and Facilities, this standard outlines requirements for the mating connection between CO₂ control valves or compressed gas regulators and Department of Transportation (DOT) approved cylinders. Its primary focus is ensuring compatibility, safety, and reliability in paintball marker fuel systems operating at output pressures up to 10,342 kPa (1800 psig).
Key Topics
- Threaded Connection Requirements
Specifies dimensional and performance criteria for the male threaded connector, including minimum engaged threads, thread type, and torque requirements. - Material Compatibility
Requires the use of materials and elastomer seals (O-rings) compatible with CO₂, compressed air, or gaseous nitrogen. O-rings must meet durometer hardness requirements and appropriate specifications, such as AMS7277 or MS28775. - Safety Considerations
Identifies responsibility for safety practices, such as ensuring proper removal torque and the use of pressure relief devices (burst discs) conforming to DOT and CGA standards. - Performance Criteria
The connector must allow adequate gas flow, maintain seal integrity, and withstand mechanical stresses (including test pressures specified by DOT and removal torque under pressure). - Physical Envelope
Dimensions and design features are defined to ensure proper fit and function with complementary connectors on approved cylinders.
Applications
- Paintball Marker Fuel Systems
The primary application is in paintball sports equipment, where regulated propellant sources (CO₂, compressed air, or nitrogen) are coupled to markers using DOT/TC-approved cylinders. The standard promotes interchangeability and safety across manufacturers and product lines. - Compressed Gas Handling
Ensures secure and leak-free connections for portable gas cylinders used in recreational and competition paintball. - Equipment Manufacturing
Essential for designers and manufacturers of paintball valves, regulators, and cylinders, supporting quality, consistency, and compliance with international regulations. - Health and Safety Compliance
Provides guidance for operators, facility managers, and end-users regarding correct installation, material compatibility, and ongoing maintenance.
Related Standards
Several standards and regulations are referenced within ASTM F2653-16(2020) to ensure comprehensive coverage and alignment with industry practice, including:
- ASTM F1750: Specification for paintball marker threaded propellant source interface.
- ASTM F2030: Specification for paintball cylinder burst disk assemblies.
- CGA S-1.1: Pressure Relief Device Standards for compressed gas cylinders.
- AMS7277 / MS28775: O-Ring and hydraulic packing specifications for elastomer seals.
- DOT 49 CFR 173/178: US Department of Transportation regulations for cylinder testing and specifications.
- FED-STD-H28/9A24: Federal Standard for screw thread specifications on gas cylinder valves.
- ANSI Y14.5M: Standard for dimensioning and tolerancing.
Practical Value
Adopting ASTM F2653-16(2020) ensures:
- Enhanced Safety for players and operators by reducing the risk of leaks, misconnection, or mechanical failure.
- Product Interchangeability between different brands and models, supporting consumer choice and industry growth.
- Regulatory Compliance with DOT and relevant international standards, facilitating global distribution and acceptance.
- Reliability in high-pressure compressed gas applications critical to paintball equipment performance.
This standard is a cornerstone in the design and use of paintball cylinders and valves, promoting safety, reliability, and global compatibility in the sport and recreation industry.
