ABSTRACT
This specification covers disposable glass serological pipets, calibrated "to deliver," used in measuring volumes of liquids. Pipets shall be straight and have one-piece construction, fabricated from borosilicate glass, Type I, Class A or B; or soda-lime glass, Type II. Any cross section of a pipet taken in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis shall be circular. The accuracy and coefficient of variation of the pipets shall be tested gravimetrically.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers disposable glass serological pipets, calibrated “to deliver,” used in measuring volumes of liquids.
1.2 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM E714-94(2021) establishes the standard specification for disposable glass serological pipets, crucial for precise measurement and delivery of liquid volumes in laboratory settings worldwide. Developed by ASTM International, this standard applies to pipets calibrated "to deliver" specified volumes and outlines detailed requirements on material, design, marking, and performance. Meeting these requirements ensures reliability, accuracy, and safety in laboratory procedures involving fluid measurement, particularly in clinical, pharmaceutical, and research environments.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Coverage

    • Specifies requirements for disposable glass serological pipets used to measure and deliver liquid volumes.
    • Covers pipets made from borosilicate glass (Type I, Class A or B) or soda-lime glass (Type II).
    • Ensures pipet design is straight, one-piece, and circular in cross-section.
  • Material Requirements

    • Borosilicate and soda-lime glass types specified for resistance to chemical attack and thermal shock.
    • Fabrication standards promote durability and precision in laboratory use.
  • Design and Construction

    • All pipets must be straight and have uniform cross-sections for accuracy.
    • Delivery tips and top ends are meticulously defined to support compatibility with filters and ensure optimal performance.
  • Calibration and Markings

    • Pipets are calibrated "to deliver" precise volumes at 20 °C.
    • Graduation and identification markings mandated for clarity and traceability, including manufacturer or vendor information.
  • Performance Testing

    • Accuracy and coefficient of variation are determined via gravimetric analysis using distilled water.
    • Strict tolerances on volume delivery and outflow times, as specified in the standard, are required for compliance.
  • Packaging and Identification

    • Packaging must comply with ASTM E920 or E921 for commercial and export requirements.
    • Each pipet package must clearly state capacity and relevant calibration details.

Applications

  • Clinical Laboratories
Disposable glass serological pipets are widely used for accurate and safe transfer of biological samples and reagents, minimizing cross-contamination risks.

  • Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Industries
Precision in volume delivery is essential for drug development, quality control, and analytical testing procedures.

  • Research Environments Academic and industrial research settings rely on these standardized pipets for consistent experimental protocols, solution preparations, and chemical analyses.

  • Educational Institutions In teaching laboratories, standardized pipets ensure students learn measurement techniques using reliable and safe equipment.

Practical Value:

  • Promotes consistent quality and safety for single-use applications.
  • Reduces measurement variances and supports reproducibility in laboratory results.
  • Streamlines procurement by defining clear purchasing criteria for laboratory consumables.
