Overview
ASTM B575-17(2023): Standard Specification for Low-Carbon Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum and Related Alloy Plate, Sheet, and Strip establishes the requirements for a variety of low-carbon nickel-based alloy products. Developed by ASTM International, this specification covers plate, sheet, and strip composed of nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloys and their derivatives, including those containing copper, tantalum, and tungsten. These materials are primarily intended for use in general corrosive service, offering superior resistance to chemical and environmental degradation.
This international standard is recognized for ensuring consistency, quality, and compliance in metal products used across diverse industries, from chemical processing to energy production.
Key Topics
- Alloy Coverage: Includes various nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloys (such as UNS N10276, N06022, N06455, N06035, N06044, N06058, N06059, N06200, N10362, N06210, N06686), as well as alloys with additional elements like copper, tantalum, and tungsten.
- Product Forms: Applies to plate, sheet, and strip that are hot or cold rolled, solution annealed, and descaled. Products may also be supplied with a bright finish when suitable annealing atmospheres are used.
- Chemical Composition: Specifies permissible ranges for essential elements including molybdenum, chromium, iron, cobalt, tungsten, silicon, manganese, vanadium, phosphorus, sulfur, titanium, nickel, aluminum, copper, and tantalum.
- Mechanical Properties: Requires conformance with minimum tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and Rockwell hardness, ensuring the final product meets strict performance criteria.
- Dimensional Tolerances: Addresses permissible variations in thickness, width, length, straightness, flatness, squareness, and edges, ensuring uniformity and machinability for downstream processing.
- Marking and Certification: Outlines requirements for clear product marking, traceability, and the availability of certification or test reports as needed.
Applications
ASTM B575-17(2023) is widely referenced in industries where resistance to corrosion is paramount. Typical applications include:
- Chemical Processing Equipment: Tanks, vessels, heat exchangers, and piping exposed to corrosive chemical media.
- Oil and Gas Industry: Components subject to sour environments and aggressive chemicals, such as refinery process units.
- Pharmaceutical and Food Processing: Equipment requiring high levels of purity and resistance to cleaning solutions.
- Power Generation: Flue gas desulfurization systems and other applications exposed to harsh conditions.
- Environmental and Waste Treatment: Components involved in the containment and handling of hazardous substances.
Related Standards
For comprehensive specification and product acceptance, ASTM B575-17(2023) is often used in conjunction with related standards, including:
- ASTM B906 – General requirements for flat-rolled nickel and nickel alloys plate, sheet, and strip.
