Overview
ASTM B333-03(2018), Standard Specification for Nickel-Molybdenum Alloy Plate, Sheet, and Strip, establishes the requirements for flat-rolled products-specifically plate, sheet, and strip-manufactured from nickel-molybdenum alloys. It addresses a range of UNS designations, including UNS N10001, N10665, N10675, N10629, and N10624. These nickel-molybdenum alloys are primarily intended for use in general corrosive service environments. Compliance with this specification ensures materials meet stringent chemical composition and mechanical property requirements, promoting reliability and consistency in critical applications.
Key Topics
Material Types Covered:
- Plate
- Sheet
- Strip

Applications
The nickel-molybdenum alloys specified by ASTM B333-03(2018) are specialized for use in environments requiring excellent corrosion resistance, such as:
- Chemical Processing Equipment: Vessels, tanks, and piping exposed to aggressive chemicals and corrosives
- Oil & Gas Industry: Components in refineries and petrochemical plants
- Pharmaceutical Manufacturing: Equipment that must maintain product purity and resist chemical attack
- Power Generation: Use in environments prone to corrosion, including heat exchanger tubes and structural components
- Marine Applications: Where resistance to seawater or brine is essential
These plates, sheets, and strips are chosen for their robust mechanical properties-such as high tensile and yield strength-and resistance to a wide range of corrosive influences, ensuring durability and longevity in service.
Related Standards
Understanding and ensuring compatibility with related standards is essential for comprehensive compliance and material selection. Relevant ASTM standards referenced in ASTM B333-03(2018) include:
- ASTM B906: Specification for General Requirements for Flat-Rolled Nickel and Nickel Alloys Plate, Sheet, and Strip
- ASTM E112: Test Methods for Determining Average Grain Size
- ASTM E140: Hardness Conversion Tables for Metals
Additionally, for pressure vessel applications, refer to ASME Specification SB-333, which covers similar requirements for use in boiler and pressure vessel code environments.
Conclusion
By adhering to ASTM B333-03(2018), organizations ensure that nickel-molybdenum alloy plate, sheet, and strip meet the highest industry standards for chemical and mechanical integrity. The rigorous requirements provide confidence in material performance and support safe, reliable operation in demanding corrosive service applications.
