Frequently Asked Questions
ISO/TC 172/SC 4/WG 2 is a Subcommittee within the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It is named "Telescopic devices". This committee has published 12 standards.
ISO/TC 172/SC 4/WG 2 develops ISO standards in the area of Information technology. Currently, there are 12 published standards from this subcommittee.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent, non-governmental international organization that develops and publishes international standards. Founded in 1947 and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, ISO brings together experts from 170+ member countries to share knowledge and develop voluntary, consensus-based standards that support innovation and provide solutions to global challenges.
A Subcommittee (SC) in ISO operates under a Technical Committee and focuses on a specific subset of the TC's scope. Subcommittees develop standards and technical specifications in their specialized area, reporting to their parent Technical Committee. They may also have working groups for detailed technical work.

This document applies to telescopic sights used on hand-held firearms and airguns and gives terms and definitions for telescopic sights only. The alphabetical indexes of terms that are common for all published parts of ISO 14132 are published in ISO 14132-1. The definitions can be changed, if required, by introducing derivative attributes into them, revealing the meanings of the terms used, showing the objects covered by the scope of the notion being defined. These changes will not affect the scope and contents of this document.

ISO 20711:2017 specifies requirements to be met with regard to resistance of the optical, mechanical, chemical and electrical properties or performance data of instruments to environmental influences and hence determines geographical and technical areas of application. It applies to consumer telescopic systems and accessories, such as hunting and sporting products. Environmental test methods as specified in relevant parts of ISO 9022 are assigned to the various areas of application for the purpose of ascertaining the suitability of the instruments in their respective area of application. ISO 20711:2017 is the basis for the specification of environmental requirements and environmental tests in instrument standards. If necessary, these requirements and tests can be amended in the instrument standards. ISO 20711:2017 does not deal with the requirements to be met by the packaging of the instrument during transport from the manufacturer to the user. NOTE Nominal values of properties and performance characteristics as understood by this document are predetermined by specifications provided by the manufacturer, technical terms of delivery and instrument standards.
