Overview

The oSIST prEN 15075:2020:2020 standard by CEN specifies the requirements and test methods for sodium hydrogen carbonate used in the treatment of swimming pool water. This standard covers sodium hydrogen carbonate either used directly or as part of commercial formulations designed for pool water treatment. It defines the physical, chemical, and purity characteristics required to ensure that sodium hydrogen carbonate is safe and effective for maintaining swimming pool water quality.

The document updates and supersedes EN 15075:2013, incorporating the latest regulatory and technical changes, especially concerning transportation, labeling, and handling procedures.

Key Topics

  • Chemical Identification
Sodium hydrogen carbonate, also known as sodium bicarbonate or baking soda, has the molecular formula NaHCO₃ and CAS number 144-55-8. It is a white powder or crystalline substance, slightly hygroscopic, with a density of 2.2 g/cm³ and solubility of 95 g/l at 20 °C.

  • Purity and Composition Requirements
The standard mandates a minimum 98.5% mass fraction of sodium hydrogen carbonate in commercial products. Impurities such as iron(II) and insoluble matter have strict limits (max 5 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg, respectively), alongside limits on hazardous elements like arsenic, cadmium, chromium, mercury, nickel, and lead.

  • Physical and Chemical Properties
Sodium hydrogen carbonate decomposes above 50 °C and reacts exothermically with acids to produce carbon dioxide. It is non-combustible and stable under dry conditions below 50 °C.

  • Application in Swimming Pools
This chemical is primarily used to increase total alkalinity in pool water, helping maintain water balance and prevent corrosion or scaling. Usage includes direct powder dosing or dissolved solutions up to 5% mass concentration. Typical alkalinity targets range between 80 mg/l and 200 mg/l CaCO₃ equivalents.

  • Safety and Handling
Includes recommendations for dust protection (masks, gloves, goggles), first aid measures in case of eye contact or ingestion, and procedures for spill clean-up. Sodium hydrogen carbonate is not a hazardous substance under current EU classification but users should be aware of incompatibilities during transport.

  • Labeling and Transportation
The substance is not currently classified as dangerous for transport and carries no UN number. Labeling must include product name, grade, net mass, supplier information, and compliance declaration to EN 15075. Delivery forms include bulk, bulk bags, or sealed bags.

Applications

  • Swimming Pool Water Treatment
Sodium hydrogen carbonate is widely applied to regulate swimming pool water alkalinity. Proper dosing improves water stability, user comfort, and reduces corrosion or scaling risks on pool infrastructure.

  • Water Quality Control
Ensures that treated pool water meets safety and comfort standards by maintaining chemical balance, which supports effective disinfection and clear, pleasant water conditions.

  • Commercial Pool Maintenance
Used by pool operators and maintenance companies for consistent dosing to maintain pool water quality within regulatory and health guidelines.

Related Standards

  • EN 898 - Chemicals used for treatment of water intended for human consumption - Sodium hydrogen carbonate.
Provides complementary methods for sampling and analytical testing referenced in oSIST prEN 15075:2020.

  • EU Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation)
Governs classification, labeling, and packaging of substances and mixtures, relevant for safety communication.

  • Council Directive 98/83/EC
Addresses water quality intended for human consumption, contextualizing impurity limits for chemicals used in water treatment.
