(Main)Fixed capacitors for use in electronic equipment - Preferred number series for resistors and capacitors
Fixed capacitors for use in electronic equipment - Preferred number series for resistors and capacitors
IEC 60063:2015 provides series of preferred values for the resistance of resistors and for the capacitance of capacitors. The definition of such series with a defined numeric resolution is a basic prerequisite for the marking and coding of capacitors and resistors with their respective capacitance or resistance values as described in IEC 60062. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
- revision of the information on a relationship between an E Series and the tolerance of a resistance or capacitance value of a respective component;
- introduction of advice on a possible deduction from the marking of a component to an associated E Series and also to an associated tolerance;
- complete editorial revision.

- révision des informations sur la relation entre une série E et la tolérance sur la valeur de la résistance ou de la capacité d'un composant;
- introduction de conseils sur une déduction possible du marquage d'un composant d'une série E associée et d'une tolérance associée;

Overview
EN 60063:2015 (identical to IEC 60063:2015) defines the preferred number series (E series) used to specify resistance and capacitance nominal values for resistors and capacitors. These preferred values - e.g. E3, E6, E12, E24, E48, E96, E192 - provide a consistent numeric resolution that underpins value marking, coding and commercial interchangeability. The standard explains the generation of two‑ and three‑significant‑digit series, the relationship between an E series and component tolerances, and guidance for deducing an E series or tolerance from component marking. EN 60063:2015 includes editorial updates and clarifications on tolerance relationships and marking deductions compared with prior editions.
Key topics
- E series definitions
- Two‑digit series: E3, E6, E12, E24 (decimal multiples and submultiples with two significant digits).
- Three‑digit series: E48, E96, E192 (values listed with three significant digits).
- Generation method
- Series are derived from a geometric progression and rounded to the required significant digits; historic rounding produces a few conventional deviations (e.g., some E24 values).
- Tolerance vs. E series
- Recommended pairings link tolerance bands to E series (examples):
- E3 for tolerances wider than ±20%
- E6 for ±20%
- E12 for ±10%
- E24 for ±5%
- E48 for ±2%
- E96 for ±1%
- E192 for tighter than ±1%
- For capacitors, practical practice often limits numeric resolution (two significant digits) and commonly uses E24 up to ±1% tolerance.
- Recommended pairings link tolerance bands to E series (examples):
- Marking and coding
- Guidance on how numeric coding (per IEC 60062) implies possible E series/tolerance when explicit tolerance marking is absent; cautions about ambiguity and necessity for clear documentation.
Applications
- Ensures consistent nominal values for designing and sourcing resistors and capacitors in electronic equipment.
- Supports PCB designers, component engineers, procurement and inventory management by standardizing available values and minimizing overlap between tolerance bands.
- Useful in component marking, coding and labeling processes where limited marking space requires inference from numeric resolution.
Who uses this standard
- Component manufacturers and test houses
- Electronic design engineers and PCB designers
- Purchasing, quality and regulatory teams in electronics industry
- Standards bodies and test laboratories

The article discusses the International Standard SIST EN 60063:2015, which provides preferred number series for resistors and capacitors used in electronic equipment. These series of values are important for marking and coding capacitors and resistors with their respective capacitance or resistance values. The series defined in this standard are based on progressive ratios of r 10, where r is equal to 3 multiplied by 2 raised to the power of i, with i being a whole number from 0 to 6. This system of progressive ratios was established before the first edition of the standard in 1952 due to standardization of tolerances and commercial practices. The adoption of ISO practice, based on a 10 10 system, was not considered achievable.
