Overview

The SIST EN 60350-1:2017/A1:2021 standard, titled Household Electric Cooking Appliances - Part 1: Ranges, Ovens, Steam Ovens and Grills - Methods for Measuring Performance, establishes internationally recognized methods to evaluate the functional performance of household electric cooking appliances. This amendment (A1) updates the original 2016 edition and was published by the CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) in June 2021. It ensures standardized performance testing addressing ranges, ovens, steam ovens, and grills, which are integral to modern kitchens worldwide.

This document supports manufacturers, testing labs, and regulatory bodies by providing consistent procedures to measure appliance performance, thus fostering transparency, safety, and consumer confidence in electric cooking devices. It is essential for compliance with European regulations and aligns with international IEC 60350-1 standards.

Key Topics

  • Scope Expansion: The amendment clarifies applicability, including portable appliances with similar functions previously covered under IEC 61817, thus broadening the standard’s reach.

  • Grill Grid Measurement: Defines methods to calculate both the entire and usable areas of grill grids, using precise metric measurements for consistency in testing.

  • Effective Grilling Area Test: Introduces an updated procedure to determine the effective grilling area based on bread browning. This practical test:

    • Uses white wheat bread slices of specified dimensions and characteristics.
    • Details preheating, grilling conditions, and timing.
    • Requires assessment of browning intensity using shade numbers (with values assessed digitally).
    • Provides formulas to calculate relative and absolute effective grilling areas and to identify browned, burnt, and unbrowned zones.
  • Color Measurement Instrumentation: Specifies the technical details for color measuring instruments used to evaluate browning shades, ensuring consistent and reproducible results globally. Key requirements include diffuse lighting geometry, aperture size, calibration standards, and wavelength range aligned with CIE guidelines.

  • Ingredients and Food Mixer Guidelines: Updates ingredient references and provides specifications for standardized food mixers used in testing batter mixtures, ensuring consistency in performance assessments related to ovens and steam ovens.

Applications

  • Performance Evaluation: Manufacturers can reliably test and compare the heating and grilling capabilities of household electric cooking appliances to meet product specifications and regulatory requirements.

  • Quality Assurance: Testing laboratories can apply the standardized methods to certify appliances for market readiness, guaranteeing consumers receive safe and efficient cooking products.

  • Product Development: Appliance developers can utilize the established test methods during R&D to optimize design parameters such as heat distribution, grill area effectiveness, and cooking times.

  • Regulatory Compliance: The standard supports manufacturers and importers in fulfilling European Union directives related to household appliance safety and performance, facilitating market access and regulatory adherence.

  • Consumer Information: Accurate, transparent performance data developed according to this standard enables clear labeling and guides consumers in appliance selection based on measurable functional criteria.

Related Standards

  • IEC 60350-1:2016 – The base international standard for performance of household electric cooking appliances; SIST EN 60350-1:2017/A1:2021 is the European amendment aligned with this.

  • IEC 61817 – Formerly related to portable cooking appliances, now incorporated by reference in this amendment enhancing the scope of EN 60350-1.

  • ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1 and 2 – Governs the development and formalization of international standards including IEC documents.

  • EU Directives on Household Appliances – The standard supports compliance with essential EU requirements regarding electrical safety and performance efficiency.

AMENDMENT 1
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
