Overview
SIST EN 15032:2006+A1:2008 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies the requirements for trichloroisocyanuric acid used in the treatment of swimming pool water. This standard applies to the chemical whether used directly or as part of commercial disinfectant formulations. It defines the product’s characteristics, purity criteria, test methods, labelling, storage, handling, and safety requirements.
Trichloroisocyanuric acid is an important disinfectant, functioning as an indirect source of free chlorine, essential for maintaining hygienic and safe swimming pool water. The standard helps ensure consistent quality and safe use of this chemical across Europe.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
Applicable to trichloroisocyanuric acid for swimming pool water disinfection, describing essential quality and safety parameters.Product Description
Covers identification, physical and chemical properties, and commercial forms (typically tablets or granules).Purity Criteria
Minimum purity requirements with at least 89% available chlorine. Limits are specified for impurities such as arsenic, cadmium, chromium, mercury, nickel, lead, antimony, and selenium to ensure safe use.Test Methods
Sampling and analysis align with EN 12933, enabling verification of chemical quality and impurity levels.Labelling and Packaging
Strict labelling regulations reflect the hazards associated with trichloroisocyanuric acid, including symbols for oxidizing properties, environmental danger, and health risks. Packaging must prevent contamination and preserve product purity.Storage and Transportation
Guidelines emphasize storage in original, tightly sealed containers away from moisture, heat, and incompatible substances such as acids and organic materials. The product is classified as dangerous good (UN Number 2468) and regulated accordingly for transport.Safety and Handling
Detailed safety rules address correct handling, emergency procedures, first aid, fire fighting, and environmental precautions. A critical safety warning prohibits mixing trichloroisocyanuric acid with inorganic chlorines (e.g., sodium hypochlorite) in the same container due to risk of hazardous reactions.General Information
Includes origin from chlorination of trisodium cyanurate and describes the chemical's disinfectant action in pool water and associated secondary effects such as cyanuric acid buildup and formation of halogenated by-products.
Applications
Swimming Pool Water Treatment
The principal use of trichloroisocyanuric acid covered by this standard is the disinfection of pool water to control microbial contamination.Commercial Formulations
Used either directly or as an ingredient in commercial chlorine-based pool disinfectants, enabling effective chlorination through slow release of hypochlorous acid.Water Quality Management
Helps maintain hygienic conditions and prevent water-borne illnesses in recreational water environments.Regulated Use
Ensures compliance with national and regional safety, environmental, and transport regulations within the EU and EFTA member states.
Related Standards
EN 12933 – Specifies chemicals for emergency water treatment, including test methods for trichloroisocyanuric acid, referenced for sampling and purity analysis.
67/548/EEC Directive – Covers classification, packaging, and labelling of dangerous substances relevant to trichloroisocyanuric acid hazard communication.
Transport Regulations
Includes RID (rail), ADR (road), IMDG (maritime), and IATA (air transport) standards for the safe transportation of dangerous goods.
