Overview

SIST EN ISO 13397-3:2000 specifies the standardized dimensions for H-type dental scalers. Developed to align with international best practices in dental equipment manufacturing, this standard ensures consistency, safety, and compatibility across dental hand instruments used for removing calculus and other deposits from teeth surfaces. As part of the larger ISO 13397 series, this document focuses specifically on H-type scalers, which are essential tools used in dental hygiene and periodontal procedures worldwide.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Purpose: The standard details dimensional specifications for H-type dental scalers to harmonize their design and ensure interchangeability among manufacturers.
  • Definitions: Provides clear definitions for dental scalers and relevant component terms-crucial for accurate communication among dental professionals and manufacturers.
  • Measurement Points: Specifications cover critical measurements such as blade width, blade thickness, blade length, blade height, shank height, radius of curvature, blade angle, and offset angle.
  • Instrument Types: Includes a range of H-type designs, such as chisel, cleoid, and sickle types, each characterized by distinct blade and handle shapes.
  • Design Consistency: Sets a maximum overall length for H-type dental scalers, ensuring ergonomic and effective use in clinical settings.

Applications

H-type dental scalers are integral to routine dental cleaning and periodontal therapy. Practical applications of the standard include:

  • Dental Practice: Dentists and hygienists can reliably select instruments of appropriate size and design for effective removal of plaque and calculus, promoting better oral health outcomes.
  • Manufacturing: Dental instrument manufacturers use the specified dimensions to produce compliant, interoperable equipment that meets global market requirements.
  • Procurement: Clinics and dental supply buyers benefit from standardized specifications, simplifying the procurement process and ensuring instrument compatibility with existing toolsets.
  • Education and Training: Dental schools and continuing education programs use these standards to instruct students and practitioners on correct instrument selection and usage.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Adhering to this standard helps manufacturers and suppliers meet regulatory requirements in various markets, facilitating international trade of dental instruments.

Related Standards

For comprehensive guidance and to ensure full compatibility, consider the following related standards:

  • ISO 13397-1: General requirements for periodontal curettes, dental scalers, and excavators. This part provides the foundational design and safety guidelines applied across all instrument types in the series.
  • ISO 13397-2: Focuses on the dimensions and requirements for Gr-type periodontal curettes.
  • ISO 13397-4: Covers dental excavators, specifically discoid-type instruments.
  • ISO 1942-3: Offers dental vocabulary for dental instruments, promoting clarity and consistency in terminology.

Practical Value

Implementing SIST EN ISO 13397-3:2000 ensures that dental practitioners and manufacturers maintain high standards of quality, safety, and interoperability. By conforming to international best practices for H-type dental scalers, users benefit from optimized instrument performance, reliable supply sourcing, and improved outcomes in dental care. Standardization streamlines the manufacturing process, minimizes errors, and enhances patient safety, making this standard a vital reference for all stakeholders in the dental industry.

Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work
of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(I EC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard IS0 13397-3 was prepared by Technical Committee
lSO/TC 106, Dentistry, Subcommittee SC 4, Dental instruments.
