Overview
EN 14243-1:2019 provides general definitions and scope for sampling and sample preparation of materials obtained from end-of-life tyres (ELT). The standard establishes the terminology and high-level requirements used to obtain a representative sample based on a sampling plan for the purpose of determining particle dimension(s) and impurities. It is part of the EN 14243 series and is intended to ensure consistent, reproducible testing across production and laboratory stages.
Key Topics
- Sampling terminology: definitions for sample, sub-sample, increment, combined sample, field sample, laboratory sample, test sample and test portion.
- Representative sampling: concepts of probabilistic and judgement-based sampling and the role of a sampling plan in producing results that reflect the parent population.
- ELT product categories by size: common dimensional classes defined in the standard:
- Cuts: typically ≥ 300 mm
- Shreds: typically 20 mm – 400 mm
- Chips: typically 10 mm – 50 mm
- Granulates: typically 0.8 mm – 20 mm
- Powders: typically < 0.8 mm
- Impurities and fractions: definitions for steel wires, textile fibres, bound textile, free steel, free textile, protruding filaments and residual rubber.
- Sieving and nominal dimensions: upper and lower defined limits for particle size distribution and oversize/undersize portions.
- Testing programme steps: sampling plan, field sampling, storage/transport, test portion preparation, pre-treatment (if needed), quantification/analysis and reporting.
Applications
EN 14243-1:2019 is primarily used by:
- Producers and processors of ELT-derived materials to define and document sampling methods and to agree product dimension ranges with customers.
- Testing laboratories to interpret and implement sampling and sample-preparation terminology and to coordinate measurement steps with EN 14243-2 and EN 14243-3.
- Quality managers and buyers involved in ELT recycling to ensure material specifications (particle size distribution and impurity content) are reliably assessed.
Practical benefits include improved comparability of test results, clearer contractual definitions of product dimensions and impurity limits, and harmonised sampling workflows that support downstream applications such as rubber reprocessing, asphalt modification, and material reuse in civil engineering.
Related Standards
- EN 14243-2:2019 - Granulates and powders: methods for particle size distribution and impurities, including free steel and free textile content.
- EN 14243-3:2019 - Shreds, cuts and chips: methods for determining dimensions including protruding filaments.
- The document supersedes CEN/TS 14243:2010 and references ISO and AFNOR standards cited in its bibliography (e.g. ISO 13909, ISO 3082) for sampling practice guidance.

Introduction This standard is used in conjunction with the other parts of EN 14243 series. Such series is intended to cover the testing programs needed to characterize each product category as shown on the figure below.
Figure 1 — Typical scheme for a testing programme concerning several characteristics with testing steps in the field and in the laboratory End-of-life tyres consist mainly of passenger and commercial vehicle tyres, truck, earthmover and agricultural tyres manufactured for distribution in the European market that are no longer suitable for their original purpose. Products from end-of-life tyres are used as a secondary raw material finding a wide range of applications. The principal categories of materials from end-of-life tyres are defined on the basis of their dimension(s) according to this standard. SIST EN 14243-1:2019
