Materials obtained from End-of-Life Tyres (ELT) - Sampling method for granulates and powders stored in big-bags and small-bags

This document specifies methods for obtaining a sample of rubber granulates or powders derived from end-of-life tyres which have been stored in big-bags and small-bags.
Sample increments at different levels within the bag are obtained, which represent the average particle size distribution within the bag. From these sample increments, a representative sample is derived.
The methods specified in this document are applicable, for example, when the samples are to be tested for e.g. bulk density, durability, particle size distribution, moisture content, ash content, ash melting behaviour, calorific value, chemical composition, impurities.

Overview

EN 17188:2024 - published by CEN in December 2024 - defines a standardized sampling method for rubber granulates and powders derived from End‑of‑Life Tyres (ELT) stored in big‑bags and small‑bags. The standard specifies how to obtain representative sample increments from different heights/positions within a bag, combine them into a laboratory sample, and document the sampling. It is intended to support reliable testing of bulk density, durability, particle size distribution, moisture, ash (content and melting behaviour), calorific value, chemical composition and impurities.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Sampling principle: Every particle in the lot should have an equal probability of inclusion to ensure representative particle size distribution, accounting for material segregation (fine particles settling toward the bottom).
  • Sampling locations: Samples must be taken from at least three different vertical levels within a bag (top, middle, bottom). Two positioning options are described for big‑bags (side positions P1–P6 or centre axis P1–P3).
  • Increments and combined sample:
    • Big‑bags: each increment should be ≥150 g; combined sample mass ≥450 g.
    • Small‑bags: select a minimum of four small‑bags (for pallet deliveries) and take one increment from each so the combined increment is ≥1 L.
  • Sampling tool: A lance-style tool with chambers is used; the opening shall be wider than three times the largest expected particle. Tools are designed for piercing the bag fabric and preventing contamination (Annex A gives tool characteristics).
  • Apparatus accuracy: Scales used shall be accurate to ±0.1 g.
  • Procedure highlights: For small‑bags, the bag is turned on the floor to mix contents, the tool is inserted in the side and withdrawn from the bag centre to collect material across full depth.
  • Documentation (sampling scheme): Records must include sampler, place/date, bag identification (serial/lot), mass of laboratory sample, tool volume, increment positions, ELT type (if known), reference to EN 17188, and any incidents or optional operations.

Applications and users

This standard is applicable where representative sampling of ELT-derived granulates and powders is required for quality control, compliance testing, product characterization and research:

  • ELT recyclers and processors
  • Testing and analytical laboratories
  • Product manufacturers using recycled rubber (infill, flooring, asphalt, fuel, etc.)
  • Environmental and safety regulators
  • Procurement and quality assurance teams verifying supplier consignments

  • EN 14243‑2:2019 - Sampling criteria for size-reduced ELT materials (clause referenced for process-stage sampling).
  • EN 17409:2020 is cited for small‑bag sampling illustration.

Introduction
Particle size distribution and related parameters are key measurements for product characterization of
size-reduced materials, such as granulates and powders derived from End-of-Life Tyres (ELTs). To
obtain an accurate particle size distribution, a representative sample of the material to be tested will be
taken according to the principle that every particle of the sample that represents the lot will have an
equal probability of being included in the sample.
Sampling criteria to assess characteristics of granulates and powders at different stages of a production
process by size reduction of end-of-life tyres are given in EN 14243-2:2019, Clause 5.
When the lot to be characterized is a big-bag or a small-bag, particular attention is given in order to
obtain a representative sample(s) because of the tendency of the stored material to segregate over time
with the smaller particles settling in the lower part of the bag.
1 Scope
This document specifies methods for obtaining a sample of rubber granulates or powders derived from
end-of-life tyres which have been stored in big-bags and small-bags.
Sample increments at different levels within the bag are obtained, which represent the average particle
size distribution within the bag. From these sample increments, a representative sample is derived.
The methods specified in this document are applicable when the samples are to be tested for e.g. bulk
density, durability, particle size distribution, moisture content, ash content, ash melting behaviour,
calorific value, chemical composition, impurities.
