Overview

SIST EN 14316-2:2007 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies the requirements and test procedures for installed in-situ thermal insulation products formed from expanded perlite (EP). This standard covers four types of expanded perlite insulating products: Perlite Aggregate (EPA), Coated Perlite (EPC), Hydrophobic Perlite (EPH), and Premixed Perlite (EPM), each containing less than 1% organic material. The focus of Part 2 is on specifying the quality and installation verification of these insulation materials once they are applied to building elements such as roofs, ceilings, walls, and floors.

This document forms a crucial part of ensuring building energy performance by verifying that installed insulation meets specified thermal resistance and thickness requirements. SIST EN 14316-2:2007 outlines measurement techniques, installer declarations, and suitability assessments but does not define absolute performance levels, which are given by related regulations or standards.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Application

    • Covers in-situ insulation using expanded perlite products for building thermal insulation applications.
    • Excludes factory-made perlite boards and formed shapes or products designed for industrial installations.
    • Does not address airborne sound insulation or acoustic absorption properties.
  • Product Types

    • Perlite Aggregate (EPA)
    • Coated Perlite (EPC)
    • Hydrophobic Perlite (EPH)
    • Premixed Perlite (EPM)
  • Thermal Performance Requirements

    • Installed insulation thickness must meet or exceed specified required thickness.
    • Declared thermal resistance (RD) is calculated based on installed thickness and declared thermal conductivity (λD).
    • Minimum installed thickness values: no individual measurement less than 80% of specified thickness.
  • Measurement and Verification

    • Installer must conduct at least five thickness measurements per 100 m² area using calibrated depth gauges.
    • Cavity widths must be measured to ensure full insulation fill before installation.
    • Used methods include guides, level marks, and the pin and plate method per EN 823 where disputes arise.
  • Installer’s Declaration

    • Installer provides a formal declaration including:
      • Product trade name and designation
      • Declared and installed thermal resistance
      • Required and installed insulation thickness
      • Volume of insulation material used
      • Installation date
    • Declaration confirms compliance with EN 14316-1 and appropriate installation procedures.
  • Building and Product Suitability

    • Assessment of structural integrity and suitability for loose fill or bonded perlite insulation.
    • Consideration of joist systems, attic ventilation, vapor barriers, and service penetrations.
    • Product checks to ensure conformity with specified designations.

Applications

SIST EN 14316-2:2007 supports energy-efficient building design by ensuring that in-situ expanded perlite insulation is correctly installed to deliver expected thermal resistance. Applications include:

  • Thermal insulation for residential and commercial roofs, ceilings, walls, and floors.
  • Retrofitting existing buildings with loose fill or bonded expanded perlite insulation products.
  • Compliance verification in construction projects to meet energy performance standards.
  • Support for installers and specifiers with a standardized framework for installation quality assurance.

This standard is valuable for architects, engineers, installation contractors, and building inspectors involved in optimizing building thermal performance using environmentally friendly and mineral-based insulation materials.

Related Standards

  • EN 14316-1:2004 – Specification for expanded perlite products before installation, providing harmonized product requirements.
  • EN 823:1994 – Methods for measuring thickness of thermal insulating products, including pin and plate technique.
  • EN ISO 9229:2005 – Definitions relating to thermal insulation terminology.
  • EN ISO 6946 – Calculation methods for thermal resistance and transmittance of building elements.
  • EN ISO 10456 – Procedures for determining declared and design thermal values of building materials.

By aligning installation practices with SIST EN 14316-2:2007 and these complementary standards, stakeholders can ensure reliable thermal insulation performance and compliance with European building regulations.
