Soil improvers and growing media - Methods for the determination of PAH16, macroscopic impurities above 2mm, the temperature-time profiles, oxygen uptake rate, self-heating factor and residual biogas potential in compost and digestate when used in fertilizing products

This document refers to methods to be used for the determination of specific parameters in compost, fresh crop digestate and digestate other than fresh crop digestate when used as components of fertilizing products, but does not contain the methods themselves. The specific parameters in this document include:
—   the determination of the PAH16 content;
—   macroscopic impurities;
—   the determination of temperature-time profiles during composting and digestion;
—   oxygen uptake rate;
—   self-heating factor;
—   the determination of the residual biogas potential in digestate.
This document is applicable to the fertilizing product blends where a blend is a mix of two or more fertilising products belonging to the categories of fertilizers, liming material, soil improvers, growing media, inhibitors and plant biostimulants, and where soil improvers and/or growing media are the components with the highest percentage in the blend by mass or volume, or in the case of products in liquid form by dry mass. If the soil improvers and/or growing media are not the components with the highest percentage in the blend, the European Standard relevant to the component with the highest percentage in the blend applies. In case a blend is composed of fertilising products mixed in equal quantities, the user of the standard decides which standard to apply.
NOTE   A soil improver or a growing medium consists of a single bulky (volume-building) component or a mix of bulky (volume-building) components (for example peat, wood fibres, coconut coir, compost, expanded perlite).

Overview

oSIST prEN 17730:2026 specifies the methods to be used for the determination of key parameters in soil improvers, growing media, compost, and digestate intended for use in fertilizing products. Developed by CEN, this standard applies to compost, fresh crop digestate, and digestate other than fresh crop digestate when they are components of fertilizer blends. The standard ensures compliance with essential safety, quality, and environmental requirements as set out by Regulation (EU) 2019/1009. Although oSIST prEN 17730:2026 does not contain the analytical methods themselves, it refers to specific standardized methods to determine chemical and physical parameters vital for product safety and marketability.

Key Topics

The standard covers the determination of several critical parameters in compost and digestate to ensure the quality and safety of fertilizing products:

  • PAH16 content: Ensures monitoring of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are important environmental contaminants.
  • Macroscopic impurities above 2mm: Quantifies physical contaminants such as glass, metal, and plastics.
  • Temperature-time profiles: Monitors biological activity during composting and digestion, contributing to process validation and safety.
  • Oxygen uptake rate: Assesses aerobic biological degradation, a key indicator of compost and digestate stability.
  • Self-heating factor: Evaluates the tendency of compost and digestate materials to undergo thermal self-heating, reflecting biological stability.
  • Residual biogas potential: Determines the remaining capacity for biogas production in digestate, important for assessing stability and environmental impact.

These parameters are crucial for producers, laboratories, and regulatory bodies in verifying fertilizing product safety, quality, and compliance with European regulations.

Applications

oSIST prEN 17730:2026 is highly relevant to stakeholders in the fertilizer and soil amendment industries, offering the following practical applications:

  • Quality assurance: Ensures that compost and digestate components of fertilizing products meet EU regulatory limits for contaminants and stability.
  • Environmental protection: Reduces the risk of soil and groundwater contamination by monitoring PAH16 and macroscopic impurities.
  • Process optimization: Provides essential information for optimizing composting and anaerobic digestion processes by tracking biological activity and stability indicators.
  • Regulatory compliance: Facilitates conformity with Regulation (EU) 2019/1009, which is mandatory for marketing soil improvers and growing media within the EU.
  • Product development: Supports manufacturers in developing new blends of soil improvers, growing media, fertilizers, liming materials, inhibitors, or plant biostimulants, especially where these are dominant components in a blend.

The standard is applicable to both solid and liquid fertilizing product blends, where soil improvers and/or growing media are present in the highest proportion by mass, volume, or dry matter for liquids.

Related Standards

oSIST prEN 17730:2026 references several key European standards for laboratory testing and product assessment:

  • EN 12579:2024 - Sampling of soil improvers and growing media.
  • prEN 13040-1:2025 - Sample preparation for physical and chemical testing.
  • prEN 16087-1:2025 - Determination of the oxygen uptake rate.
  • prEN 16087-2:2025 - Self-heating test for compost.
  • prEN 16202:2025 - Determination of macroscopic impurities and stones.

  • prEN 18256:2025 - Determination of residual biogas potential.
  • prEN 18261:2025 - Determination of PAH by GC and HPLC.

Collectively, these referenced standards form a robust framework for ensuring the safety, quality, and marketability of soil improvers, compost, and digestate in fertilizing products across Europe.

Introduction
Different product functions warrant different product safety, quality and quantity requirements adapted
to their different intended uses. EU fertilizing products have therefore been divided into different product
function categories (PFCs), which are subject to specific safety, quality and quantity requirements, as
specified in the Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 [1]. EU fertilizing products consist of component materials
complying with the requirements for one or more of the component material categories (CMCs), as
specified in the Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 [1].
Compost has been classified as CMC 3, fresh crop digestate as CMC 4, and digestate other than fresh crop
digestate as CMC 5. The specific safety and quality requirements in relation to specific parameters are
specified in this document, as well as normative references of the test methods to be used to assess the
